1. Lead-up to the American Revolution

3. 1774 The British Control the 13 Colonies Also known as “America”
British also Control Quebec
Also known as “Canada”
HOWEVER, the Americans are not happy with the British, and Vice Versa

4. Hatred Between Americans and British
Begins in 1773 with the “Boston Tea Party”
During the “7 Years War”, British Increased Taxes on Americans MASSIVELY
“No Taxation Without Representation!”
Basically means: You are not allowed to Tax us unless we get something equal in return
As a result, American Protestors boarded a British ship, and dumped Tea into the Boston Bay

6. British saw this as INSULT!
To punish the Americans, the enacted 4 Major Laws over the course of a few years which harmed Americans in the Colonies
Americans saw these 4 plus 1 older law as:
“The 5 Intolerable Acts”
Led to the “American Revolution
America to break off from British rule, and become its OWN COUNTRY

7. Intolerable Act 1 Quartering Act, March 24th, 1765
American Colonists must house and feed any British Soldier who came to their door and asked to stay.

8. Intolerable Act 2 The Boston Tea Port Act, June 1st, 1774
Closed the port of Boston until all damages of the “Boston Tea Party” were paid for by the Americans

9. Intolerable Act 3 Administration of Justice Act, May 20th, 1774
Any Officer of Soldier in the British Government or Army who was arrested could be sent to England for Trial. This means that Americans could be sent to England for Trial.

10. Intolerable Act 4 Massachusetts Government Act, May 20th, 1774
The act effected the American’s Charter and Laws. British placed major limits on town meetings. Took control out of American hands. Couldn’t meet or speak when or about what they wanted.

11. Intolerable Act 5 The Quebec Act, May 20th, 1774
Changed where the Canadian border was
Extended the Province of Quebec (Canada) all the way South into the Ohio River. A place that the Americans claimed and wanted as their own.

12. Revolution Begins in 1775
However, not ALL Americans are in favour of a Revolution
This breaks the Americans into 2 distinct groups

13. American Rebels (Patriots)
In favour of the Revolution
Hate the British and want to break off and become their own country
Primarily White (European)

14. British Loyalists
People living in the 13 Colonies (America) that DID NOT support the Revolution
Still loyal to the British
Could be White, Black, Native American
