The scientific career He was a Romanian physiologist and professor of medicine, who worked on pancreine (a pancreatic extract containing insulin). He discovered the antidiabetic hormone released by the pancreas, later called insulin.

Important researches In 1906 he developed an original method of extirpation of the hypophysis into the dog via the trans-temporal pathway, which will be applied in surgery in humans. His innovative research inspired, later, the work of American neurosurgeon Harvey Cushing.
