Our Norms for Working Together
Put students first as we think about the work Be fully present (different with technology) Tell your truth Leave your title at the door and think enterprise-wide Help us to figure out how to solve -- and not just identify -- the problems that we face (addressing and influencing) Keep the conversation confidential Use the “Red Flag” rule if you need to Give yourself the freedom to relax and be a learner Avni

Warm-Up Data What’s the 1 most impactful talent data metric you wish you had to influence others? Why?
13
Questions Your Data Should Answer
Key Metrics Needed to Tell Your State’s Story “The most serious mistakes are not being made as a result of wrong answers. The truly dangerous thing is asking the wrong question.” – Peter Drucker QUANTITY Do we have enough teachers to meet our state’s needs - now and in the future? QUALITY Do we have quality/effective teachers to meet our state’s needs? EQUITY Is there equity between our high- and lower-needs schools? Danielle – Questions Your Data Should Answer Seeks to answer 4 key questions. As leadership and priorities change, these buckets represent the enduring purpose of state HC work. DISTRICT HC CAPACITY Are we effectively supporting our districts to strategically manage talent?
14
Metrics to Collect & Share: Key Area 1
Diagnostic Reference Answers Questions of: Power Metrics 1.A Quantity Number of graduates by teacher preparation provider and by teachers coming from out-of-state, by subject and grade level and compared to vacancies throughout the state 1.B Quality 1. Percentage of districts satisfied with teaching candidates produced through state Preparation Providers; 2. Performance level of new teachers analyzed by program and subject 1.C Quality & Equity Statewide annual district average turnover and retention data including district data, level of performance, and comparative information 1.D Equity Statewide annual average teacher attendance data 1.E Experience and Performance level of all teachers analyzed by high/low needs schools and school districts 1.F Equity & Capacity Percentage of districts satisfied with differentiated State supports for HC work There are some assumptions we make with these power metrics. Can identify effective teachers Can identify high-needs schools & critical shortage subjects Track satisfaction of key customers – at the district Putting these foundations in place is hard but necessary to understand how you are supporting schools in your district. These may evolve over time.
15
“All Eyes in the State” on these Metrics
Stakeholders: Districts, TPPs, Unions, etc. State Leaders Regional Teams HR/HC Leadership Power Metrics Danielle To build support for your work, share the data from the power metrics with others. The more others understand where you are, the more likely they will be to support and sustain your work. Everyone has a hand in helping to move these metrics. Not just for you. All eyes. The more others know and understand, the more likely they are to support this work. Sustainability

24
Key District Pain Points
Where Can the State Support? How do we help more people enter teaching if they did not go to school for education? (e.g. career changers, people with industry experience, etc.) How do we keep potential teachers from getting stuck in the certification process? (e.g. reciprocity, clarity of process and different types of certification) Link to landscape analysis Choose 1 to Discuss
25
Brainstorming Regulator Influencer Innovator Connector
4 Approaches Potential ROOT CAUSES To address your pain point, brainstorm what actions you can take in these APPROACHES: Influencer? Connector? Innovator? Post to chart and discuss your LOCUS OF CONTROL Decide on 2 promising ideas to share with the group Split chart paper into 4 quadrants, but they are not allowed to fill in the regulator quadrant. Individually brainstorm with post-its and discuss themes and ideas Pick two promising ideas to share with the group
