The natural world can be explained through observation and questioning accepted beliefs. Reason, logic, & experimentation
6
Heliocentric Theory Geocentric- Earth is in the middle (church).
Heliocentric- sun-centered universe (Scientists). Nicolaus Copernicus ( ) – Used astronomy to show planets revolve around the sun. Did not publish until his death Johannes Kepler ( )- Laws govern planetary motion. Blends religion and science
7
Galileo ( ) Law of gravity- a falling object accelerates at a fixed rate. Created Galilean telescope- supports heliocentric theory. Church reacts negatively. Galileo stood trial and was forced to renounce his theory. Spends last 10 years on house arrest
8
Scientific Method Logical procedure for gathering and testing ideas.
Sir Francis Bacon believed that scientists could produce practical knowledge through observation. Experiment instead of abstract thought. Decartes method uses mathematics and logic. “I think, therefore I am.”
9
Sir Isaac Newton ( ) Laws of motion, universal gravitation, calculus, square roots Reflecting telescope- proves Heliocentric theory Adds religion by claiming “God” was the clockmaker that set the world in motion.
10
Medicine Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564) dissected human corpses.
