Winner: Allies
Significance: Entire battle fought with aircraft. Prevented Japan from successfully invading New Guinea and Australia

6. Battle of Midway Date: June 4-7 1942 Theatre: Pacific
Location: Central Pacific
Winner: Allies
Significance: Allies broke Japanese Code, Japan lost 4 of their 10 aircraft carriers and 7 of their 11 ships destroyed, as well as 250 Japanese planes; turning point of the war. Japan no longer had hopes of invading US mainland.

Location: Solomon Islands
Winner: Allies
Significance: Beginning of “island hopping”, eventually pushes Japanese back to Japan. First Japanese land defeat. Bitter jungle fights for 6 months.

Significance: Largest naval battle in history.

Significance: 50,000 Casualties resulted from fierce fighting which virtually destroyed Japan’s remaining offenses. Bloodshed influenced the eventual use of the atomic bomb to prevent further US casualties from ground assaults

Location: Nagasaki, Japan
Winner: Allies
Significance: 60,000 Dead, Japan surrenders unconditionally on August 14,

Location: USS Missouri, in Tokyo Bay
Winner: Allies
Significance: Japanese formally surrenders to General Douglas MacArthur. World War II is over.
