3 During this meeting, we will:
Meeting outcomes: During this meeting, we will: Identify the vision of mathematics education at the middle school level Describe the importance of Algebra 1 and it’s implication for high school graduation Describe the differences between Math 6 and GT Math 6 Time is allotted for Q&A by DMS math faculty at the end of the presentation

4 Our Vision: Who are we? Dumbarton Middle:
BCPS Office of Mathematics PreK-12 The middle school mathematics curriculum continues to Build the Foundation by capitalizing on students' strengths and interests to introduce them to how mathematics can be used as a tool and a language in the various STEM and Humanities fields. The high school mathematics curriculum provides time to Fortify the Foundation by solidifying students' readiness for post secondary mathematics courses and opportunities that rely on a strong understanding and application of mathematical concepts and skills. Dumbarton Middle: Develop a community of confident problem solvers who have an appreciation for mathematics and who grow as mathematicians. Source:

6 What does this come down to?
It’s really about when your child is ready for Algebra 1 GT Math 7 = Algebra 1. Otherwise, students take Algebra 1 in 8th or 9th grade, based on 7th grade teacher recommendation. It’s the same Algebra course. Passing PARCC/MCAP is a graduation requirement. Our job is to ensure that your child is ready to pass that test when they get to Algebra 1, whenever that is.

7 Graduation Requirements
Algebra 1 Graduation Requirements Pass Algebra 1 PARCC1 Current 8th graders will need a passing score of 725 Current 6th & 7th graders will need a passing score of 750 Enroll in a mathematics course in each year of high school2 three credits, including one with instruction in algebra aligned with the Maryland High School Assessment for algebra or one or more credits in subsequent mathematics courses for which algebra is a prerequisite, and one with instruction in geometry aligned with the content standards for geometry’ Take mathematics PARCC exam aligned with course enrollment in their 9th grade year. 1: 2:

8 Algebra 1 Curriculum Linear Functions Quantities and Relationships Graphs, Equations, Linear Functions, and Inequalities Analyzing Data Sets for Two Quantitative Variables Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities Quadratic Functions Graphs of Quadratic Functions Polynomial Expressions and Solving Quadratic Equations Exponential Functions Sequences and the Graphs of Linear and Exponential Functions Other Functions Piecewise and Step Functions Data Analysis Analyzing Data Sets for One Variable Analyzing Data Sets for Two Categorical Variables

9 Let’s just talk about next year…
How do we make decisions on scheduling? Incoming 6th graders Based on 5th grade teacher recommendations

10 Math 6 vs. GT Math 6 What is the difference?
Math 6 covers all of the 6th grade standards: Integers Factors/multiples Fractions & Decimals * Ratios & unit rates Simplifying expressions Solving one-step equations Area, Surface Area, Volume Data Analysis GT Math 6 covers 7th & 8th grade standards: Integers Scientific Notation Pythagorean Theorem & Square Roots Expressions, Equations & Inequalities Logic Graphing lines on the Coordinate Plane Geometric Relationships Proportions Area, Surface Area, Volume Data Analysis Multi-step equations

11 Implications for Scheduling
I want my child in GT6, but they have not taken Advanced 5 Students who have not taken Advanced 5 will miss an entire year of content by going into GT 6. This is typically not recommended. Students who are not in GT have the opportunity in 8th grade to accelerate by taking online Geometry and therefore enter high school in GT9 without the loss of content

12 How about Homework? Yes! We assign homework! Math 6 → Mon & Weds
GT 6 → preview reading & notes PreAlgebra → 3x a week Algebra 1 (GT7 and 8th grade) → 4-5x a week with graded assignments.

13 Thank you for coming! Q & A General questions for the Group:
