Net increments of serum levels of TSH, free T4 and free T3 after a TSH-releasing hormone (TRH) stimulation test in patients with central hypothyroidism of hypothalamic origin and controls matched for age and sex. Note the exaggerated TSH response and the significantly smaller increase in free T4 and free T3 in hypothalamic hypothyroidism. These results provide an indirect estimate of the poor bioactivity of TSH molecules secreted in these conditions. the asterisks indicate a highly significant difference (P < 0.001) between patients and controls.
