Job is to represent constituents and be a legislator 4 voting options: Trustee: votes on own conscious Delegate: representative of constituents Partisan: party-lines over constituents Politico: combine previous three

4 Committee/Servants Committees screen all proposals
Oversight checks to see that various agencies in executive branch are following laws set Legislators act(ideally) as servants to the people In theory, if members don’t vote how the people want, they will get voted out

5 Compensation Salary for “regular” reps is about $170,000/year
Speaker = $212,000/yr(same as VP) Non-salary comp(tax deductions, great insurance, free parking, franking privilege

6 Politics of Pay/Membership Privileges
Limits of pay are President’s veto and fear of voter backlash Members of Congress can’t be arrested during a session Total freedom of speech on House floor
