Characteristics Brown or maroon, and white stripes or bands covering the head and body. They have fleshy tentacles above their eyes and below the mouth fan-like pectoral fins long, separated dorsal spines 13 dorsal spines 10-11 dorsal soft rays 3 anal spines 6-7 anal soft rays
3
Characteristics. Cont The scientific name of the lionfish is pterios volitans. Lionfish have poison on their dorsal spines which if touched can be harmful. Lionfish have distinctive brown or maroon, and white stripes or bands covering the head and body.
4
Distribution of The Organism
The lionfish is native to the South Pacific and Indian Oceans. The range of the lionfish covers a very large area from western Australia and Malaysia east to French Polynesia and the United Kingdom's Pitcairn Islands, north to southern Japan and Southern Korea and south to Lord Howe Island off the east coast of Australia and the Kermadec Islands of New Zealand. In between, the species is found throughout Micronesia.
5
Introduction to The Adaptation
·Lionfish have many adaptations that make them as dangerous as they are beautiful. Their adaptations also play a big role as being skillful hunters as well as being an invasive species and a threat to the environment and organisms around them, even humans. Many of their adaptations include; their camouflage, which allow them to camouflage suitably into the coral reefs of the Indian and the Pacific ocean which is the native place of the fish, their venomous tentacles used to attract and kill prey, their appendaged which help conceal the features of the head to confuse prey what side of the lionfish is the front, their center of gravity which is a special hunting strategy in which using their swim bladder, they’re able to suspend itself in a water column in a motionless state to catch prey by surprise.
6
Why Adaptation is Important and Its Advantages It Provides the Organism
·Its adaptations are extremely important because its what makes the Lionfish such skillful predators and so dangerous to encounter. Their adaptations make them almost impossible to control. Their adaptations are what make it possible for them to survive in the environment as also allow them to spread far and wide in habitats such as the coast of Florida, where they’re not preyed upon. The advantages their adaptations give them is absolute invincibility amongst other aquatic organisms that are NOT in their native habitat, which is why it's encouraged to kill them when found due to their harmful invasiveness to the environment as they feed on 6 different species of fish.
7
Why it matters Although lionfish are well suited to their environment, it makes them near invincible here in south florida considering they have no natural predators. The invasion of these species truly can affect us in the long run economically and environmentally. Lionfish are ruining the ecosystem by ruining the bait fish population and causing havoc in the food chain. That's the downfall to them not having any predators.
8
How they got here Lion fish are beloved to have been introduced to Florida by aquarium trade. Another possible cause for Lionfish invasion was in 1985 when hurricane Andrew Came and caused 6 lion fished to be released from an aquarium into the ocean. Another possible cause is cruise ship bouyancy systems.
