Trading relationships to colonised peoples
Problem 4 – how should the different imperial countries control the colonised peoples? they all need to do the same thing, so they don’t seem threatening to each other Europe realised how valuable Africa was Problem 5 – the different European countries have realised the wealth that is in Africa and want to colonise the different parts quickly which risks war/conflict The entirety of Africa was now mapped by 1877 Problem 6 – due to mapping, colonisation would accelerate, which could lead to European conflict over where to colonise Italy had given the impression they would be allies with Germany. However, Italy changed its mind and became allies with Britain and France instead. This meant Germany needed to be stronger in another way. Problem 7 – Germany wants to colonise parts of Africa to look stronger after Italy abandoned them Germany was a newly unified country that wanted to prove itself. France was pushing Eastwards from the Eastern Congo towards East Africa (where Britain had recently colonised Egypt) Germany began launching its own expeditions to explore uncolonised parts of West Africa and raise its flag there. The French were angry as the British and the French both sailed and traded on the Niger river. The British then made them leave by buying Nigerian goods for high prices and selling manufactured goods for small amounts.
