St Luke’s Church of England School Newsletter 01 July 2016
Message from Mrs Tyler KS1 parents were treated to a wonderful art exhibition on Thursday. Inspired by the visiting artist last week, the children had sketched and then painted with watercolours some wonderful seaside landscapes. Their attention to detail and use of colours was really quite extraordinary. KS2 meanwhile, continued their sporting theme with an ‘engagement’ day at Lords, where they both watched and played cricket – all the children agreed that cricket was great fun, but it wasn’t as fast as the hockey they had seen at the Olympic Stadium the week before. The children have been busily practising for the End of Year Concert next Thursday. Please don’t forget to send in the concert clothes (see reminder below) on Tuesday 5th July, ready for our dress rehearsal the following day. You may remember we are trialling this at a new time – the start of the day – to help our working families. We look forward to seeing you at 9.15am. This will hopefully be the last time the children will be performing at floor level! The Friends of St Luke’s (PFA) are raising money to purchase some staging for the school. Please do come along to the Summer Fair tomorrow to help raise the funds for the staging and to join in the family fun. The answer is YES PLEASE! All the children will be involved in the short service and it would be wonderful to have everyone together to mark the five years celebration since the school was opened. Reception Class Golden Book Ella for amazing progress in her writing . Gabriel for learning our concert dance so well. Maths Monkey Jed for making links in his learning. KS1 Class Golden Book Shaun for his amazing dance moves and helping others remember the steps. Kanako for her thoughtful comments about sharing in RE. Olympic Week – last week of term We are planning our Olympic Week for the last week of term. On the Monday 11th July, we will hold an opening ceremony and we would like the children to wear a plain t-shirt in the colours which make up the Olympic rings. Please bring the named clothes in BY Friday 8th July. Thank you. Reception: Red Y1: Yellow Y2: Blue Y3: Green Y4: Black News from Reception This week we embraced the pirate theme. The children looked in books to find out what they needed and collected a lot of wonderful ideas on the whiteboard, which we then attempted to create! We built the role-play pirate ship which includes a flag, telescopes, a cannon, cannonballs, eye patches and swords. I have been very impressed with the children’s ideas and creativity, persevering with challenges and thinking about ways to construct and attach different materials. The children have since had a lot of fun playing in there, making up stories and talking like pirates! From all of this imaginative play, the children have been able to produce some informative and exciting pirate writing. In Maths we have been using mathematical language and applying it to measurement and practical activities, including using directional language. Our dance and poem rehearsals are going well but please ensure your child knows their poem lines by Monday, thank you. KS1 Maths Monkey has set a challenge from his Maths Monkey School: How many ways can you make 36? KS2 Certificate of Merit Year 3 Carla for being kind and considerate to others. Year 4 Lawrence for being a reading role model. KS2 Maths Mascot Christian BB for great focus and problem solving.

2015-16 and 2016-17 term dates are on the school website.
News from KS1 The children have been busy practising their dances and rap. You are in for a treat next Thursday with our End of Year Concert. Please send in your costumes in a bag labelled with your child’s name. In RE we listened to the story of ‘Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand’, and thought about how it is important to share. We are particularly proud of KS1’s ability to think of others. In Design and Technology we have been sewing puppets, the children have found it tricky to sew on buttons but have persevered. The puppets will be ready before the end of term. We hope everyone enjoyed the art exhibition on Thursday. Reception and KS2 also visited and were impressed with our paintings. News from KS2 We have continued to read our class book, ‘Goggle-eyes’, this week and have used it as a stimulus for some great persuasive writing. Over the past few days the children have been planning and writing a persuasive leaflet about an issue they are passionate about – they are fantastic! In Maths I have introduced the children to another card game – pontoon/21s. Get the children to show you how to play. It’s a good game for getting them to add totals to 21, think about chance and probability and use the language of ‘how many more’. Last week the children were given their final spelling list (number 10). Today they have been given a copy of the High Frequency Words they need to learn whilst at school. Get them to highlight the words they already know and practise the ones they don’t. I will randomly test these words over the next couple of Fridays. Well done to our Y4 tennis team who represented Camden at the London School Games – they did St Luke’s and Camden proud and were unlucky not to make it to the quarter-finals. A special well done to Nina who won all her matches. Dates for Diary (Summer term) and term dates are on the school website.
