Diversity In Dentition

Human People are Omnivores. They ear both meat and vegetation. People generally have 16 teeth in the upper jaw, and 16 in the lower jaw – making 32 teeth all together. The teeth of a human vary in size and shape, for different functions like grinding and tearing. This is a heterodont. The jaw bone holds the teeth and is called the Mandible. It is the lower jaw. The upper jaw, is called the Maxilla.

Type of Teeth in the Human Mouth
People have 4 types of teeth. They each have a specific shape and size for their function. Adults have 8 incisors located at the very front of the mouth. There are 4 in the top and 4 in the bottom. They are used to cut food into pieces. On either side of the incisors are your 4 (two in each jaw) canines, named after canine dog teeth because they are pointy and sharp like a dog’s. the upper canine teeth are sometimes called ‘eyeteeth’. Their job is to tear food. Behind the canine teeth are the bicuspids or premolars, which are flat with distinct cusps in them. These teeth are used to grind and mash food. There are four bicuspids in each jaw. Behind the bicuspids are your molars. These teeth are responsible for the most vigorous chewing of all the teeth. There are twelve molars: 6 in each jaw. The end molars are also called wisdom teeth and are sometimes taken out.

Cows Cows are Herbivores and only eat vegetation. Cows have a total of 32 teeth. Their diet can determine what kind of adaptations cows have made in order to improve their diet needs. Plants have strong cellulose cell walls that need to be broken up in order to be used. Herbivores (such as cows) have tough grinding molars to crush the plant cell walls. Also, herbivores do not have very sharp long canine teeth, because over the years they have adapted to having them blunt, because there is no need to pierce and penetrate vegetation.

Type of teeth In Cows Firstly, cows have no top incisors. Only bottom ones. On the top jaw where the incisors and canines should be, are no teeth at all. Just really tough gum called a Dental pad. Its used to help pull grass out of the ground. They have 6 incisors and 2 canines in the front on the bottom. The canines are not pointy and sharp, but just look like the incisors. Incisors are used to chop and nip off vegetation. There is a gap between the incisors and the premolars where food is temporarily stored while the cow is biting off more food, until it is then chewed at the back by the molar teeth. Cows have a total of 24 molars: 6 bicuspids on each jaw, and 6 molars on each jaw.

Dogs Dogs are Carnivores and their diet typically only consists of meat. Most carnivores kill prey in order to eat. Therefore they have adapted sharp, long teeth, to puncture their prey and quickly killing it. Without these teeth, they would not be able to puncture other animal’s skin and kill it.

Type of teeth in Dogs Dogs have incisor teeth at the front to cut food, 2 canine teeth in each jaw, to kill prey and puncture, rip and shred meat, and molars to grind the food for it to be swallowed. Dogs in particular have carnassials teeth, at the side of the jaw next to the molars that are used to crack bones and cut flesh, like scissors.
