HOW TO SET UP THE CLASS STARTER SECTION OF YOUR NOTEBOOK

2 Class Starter Directions
1. Write lesson number, title and date 2. Copy everything in black text. (Write neatly) 3. Completely answer the prompt (in red.) 4. Skip or draw a line between starters 5. No more than 3 starters per page If you are absent, you must make it up. Starters are graded.

3 RS1 – Before Reading Strategies
Date Set a Purpose – the reason you are going to read text Previewing – figuring out what something is going to be about Activate Prior Knowledge – recall what you already know about a topic Name 3 ways you can preview new text.

4 RS2 – During Reading Strategies
Date 4. Make a Connection – text to self, text to text, text to world 5. Predict and Check – guess what will happen next... Did it happen? 6. Visualize – picture in your mind what is being described Make 1 connection to your summer reading choice book, and label what type of connection you made.

5 RS3 – During Reading Strategies
Date 7. Monitor – ask yourself questions as you read to check your understanding 8. Make Inferences - make an educated guess based on what you read and what you know. Make an inference about the following statement: “The small yellow lab limped into the house holding up her right paw.”

6 RS4 -Reading Strategy Check
DATE Name the following strategies: Checking to see if you understand Guess what is going to happen in the story Use what you already know Skim through the book Make a picture in your head Set a reason for reading Make a guess about the story based on what you read and what you know “I remember when I lost my dog….”
