1 Naviance/Naviance Student Senior Year

2 California Community Colleges
List of CA Community Colleges available on the SRVHS website. Under the counseling tab, click on “college resources,” and then click on “community college”. Research your options in our Career and College Center. Students will need to take English and Math placement tests at DVC or Las Positas in early spring. Register early! In Jan/Feb see the SRV College and Career Center for registration information. Also, check your School Loop news for information.

5 Colleges That Use The Common Application
If the college(s) to which you are applying uses the Common Application, before you list the college(s) in Naviance, you must first go to: and create an account. Write down the address you used to create your Common App account. You will need to use this exact same address later in Naviance to match up your Common App account. In the Common App you must complete the Education Section. Go to “My Colleges” tab. Then on left side of page, click on “Recommenders and FERPA.” Complete the FERPA agreement in WAIVING YOUR RIGHTS to see your recommendations. Please Note: School staff will not write your recommendations unless you have waived your FERPA rights.

What is Coalition? New college application portal (like Common App.) Who is using Coalition? Approx. 141 colleges nationwide will accept application for Participating colleges: Coalition application only required by 4 colleges: PLEASE USE Common App unless applying to one of these colleges: --Univ of Wash., Seattle – no transcript required/grades self-reported, no letters of rec. --Univ of Florida – no transcript required/grades self-reported, no letters of rec. --Univ of Maryland, College Park – requires transcript, 2 letters of rec – transcript and letters submitted through Naviance. --Virginia Tech – no transcript required/grades self-reported, no letters of rec. To apply using Coalition Application: 1. Create FREE Coalition account 2. Add college(s) to College List 3. Complete Profile (Personal Info, Family Info, 9th-11th Grade Coursework, SAT/ACT/SAT II scores, Financial Aid info, Extracurricular Activities, etc. 4. Complete college-related Questions (i.e. essays, intended major) 5. Pay application fee

7 Getting Started On Naviance Student
Click on the “Naviance (for students and parents)” link on the lower left side of the front page of the SRVHS website at: Use the and password you used to log in to Naviance last year. (Note: Your should be your school address and your password should be your student ID number). Click on the “forgot password?” link if you need to retrieve your password and it will be ed to you. Still stuck? Go to the SRVHS College and Career Center or see your Counselor for help.

Here is where you will enter colleges to which you are applying If you need a Counselor Letter of Recommendation, you will need to complete your “Senior Packet” – items 1-4 in your Document Resources folder

9 Go to “Colleges” “Research Colleges” “College Resources”
“SuperMatch” and “Colleges match” --- research colleges and find potential matches “College Visits” – signup here to attend college visits in C&CC. Note: students must register from student portal

10 Click here to match your Common App and Naviance accounts – address and birth date MUST be the same

From your Naviance homepage, scroll to the bottom of the screen and click on “Common App Matching” to watch a helpful video on how to match your Common App account with your Naviance account.

14 Use the edit button to edit submission type and application type (regular decision, early action, etc. A question mark means you have not yet indicated HOW you will apply to school

15 Requesting Letters of Recommendation From Teachers
For colleges that require letters of recommendation from teachers, please first ask teachers in person if they would be willing to write you a letter. Ask teachers at least 3 school weeks prior to your due date and ask teacher(s) what if anything they may need to write for you (i.e. resume) Download a Due Date Form from “Document Resources” folder located on the homepage in Naviance Student. IMPORTANT: Give the completed Due Date form to your teachers and make sure they are clear on which colleges they need to submit their recs to for you. Make sure you have also indicated this in Naviance Student clearly. If you are applying to colleges that only accept recs through US mail (not electronically), make sure that you provide your teachers with any required teacher forms, as well as stamped envelopes, addressed to each college. Then electronically send your teacher recommendation requests in Naviance (“Colleges” “Apply to College” “Letters of Recomendation”). Remember: CSU and UC do not accept letters of recommendation.

Go to Naviance homepage Click on “Colleges” tab (upper right corner) Click on “Apply to College,” Click on “Letters of Recommendation” Click on “Add Request” and use pulldown menu to select teacher

17 For Letters of Rec from Your Counselor
Step #1: Go to the “Document Resources” link located at the bottom of the Naviance Student homepage Step #2: Complete forms #1-4: (this is your “Senior Packet”) 1. Due Date Form 2. Student Self Evaluation 3. Parent Questionnaire (parent completes this and gives it back to you) 4. Resume (a resume template is available in Naviance under “About Me” and “My Stuff” Step #3: Download and read “Instructions for College App” document and follow guided steps.

18 For Letters of Rec from Your Counselor continued…
Put all of these completed forms in an envelope with the due date form on the top and make an appt. to see your counselor with this packet AT LEAST 3 SCHOOL WEEKS prior to your first due date. **NOTE: If you are applying to a school that uses the Common Application, you WILL need a counselor letter of recommendation. If you are applying to any schools that don’t accept electronic submissions bring any required college forms, as well as stamped, addressed envelopes for your counselor to mail your recommendations. Staff will NOT write letters over the holiday breaks. Plan well ahead. If you have a deadline that falls over the winter break, you will need have your forms to your teachers/counselor by Dec. 3rd. Those not received by Dec. 3 will not be sent until after Jan. 7th. Check back on Naviance Student to view status of your letter of rec requests.

19 Please Remember Also: Send Thank You notes to those who wrote you recommendations. UC’s/CSU’s do not ask for and will not read letters of recommendation during the initial application process Do not order transcripts for UC’s or CSU’s. You will self-report courses and grades – be accurate! Remember to update in Naviance Student your college admission decisions as you receive them.

20 Send your SAT and/or ACT Test Scores
Don’t forget to go to to send your SAT and AP test scores to your colleges. Don’t use Score Choice (unless instructed to by the college). Don’t forget to go to to send your ACT test scores to your colleges. Naviance/Family Connection does NOT send ANY test scores to your colleges. UC’s: For SAT & ACT send to one campus and all campuses will automatically have access to that score report. CSU’s: For SAT: Send scores to “3594”. ALL CSU campuses will then have access to your SAT scores. For ACT: You must send scores to each CSU campus. All other Colleges: You need to send scores to each college.

21 Applying to College. . . Student Responsibility:
Completing College Applications for each college Adding colleges in and ordering transcripts in Naviance Student. SAT/ACT Scores must be sent through testing agency Collegeboard.org ACTstudent.org Follow up with each school Notifying recommenders if/when you add more colleges you are applying to Mid-Year/Final Reports School Responsibility: School Counselors submit the following: Recommendation letters Secondary School Report School Profile Official Transcript – to be ordered by the student through Family Connection Teachers Submit: Teacher Report

22 Scholarships Scholarships we receive notifications about are posted in Naviance. (Click on “Colleges” tab, “Scholarships and Money,” “Scholarship List”) Also check out the financial aid pages of each college. (Many are posting links to scholarships). Check out the SRV College and Career Center web page (“Financial Aid & Scholarships”) Use “National Scholarship Search) on Naviance under “Scholarships and Money” Other websites:

23 What’s next… Financial Aid: Complete the FAFSA after October 1st, and before the deadline of March 2nd, Out of State College Fair on Sept. 12 at SRVHS during Access and Lunch in the Library. The SRV College and Career Center will co-host a Financial Aid Overview Night on Sept. 24 at MVHS at 7pm, Theater. Seniors and their parents invited. District College Fair on Oct. 24 at MVHS, 6:30-8:30pm. Stop in to the CCC with any questions you have regarding colleges or applications! Also Check Naviance and the school bulletin for workshops on writing essays, building a college list, and navigating Naviance. If you have additional questions, please sign up in counseling to see your counselor during Access. Make sure that ALL colleges that you are applying to are listed in Naviance! Check college websites and apply early for housing!
