ROME’S FRONTIERS IN NORTHERN BRITAIN
THE GASK RIDGE Flavian era (c AD) Prototype? – possibly the earliest frontier system in the Roman Empire From Glenbank near Dunblane to Bertha near Perth (37km) Series of “Glen blocking” forts to north System of forts, fortlets and watchtowers along a Roman road between the Forth and the Tay Separated the Highlands from the fertile Eastern Lowlands and Fife Abandoned c AD

HADRIAN’S WALL Constructed under Emperor Hadrian, 122-30 AD
Built across the Tyne-Solway isthmus, from Bowness-on-Solway to Wallsend on the Tyne Built “to separate the Romans and barbarians” Stone wall, ditch and vallum 80 Roman miles (73 Imperial miles)

THE ANTONINE WALL Constructed under Emperor Antoninus Pius between 142 and 144/5 AD From Old Kilpatrick on the Clyde to Bridgeness/Carriden on the Forth 37 miles across the Forth-Clyde isthmus Turf on a stone base Abandoned c.163 AD, shortly after Antoninus’ death

Legionary Fortress – Inchtuthil, Perth & Kinross
Inchtuthil in Perth and Kinross was built in the mid 80s It was built to accommodate an entire legion – the XX Valeria Victrix 10 times the size of London’s Olympic Stadium 64 barrack buildings housing around 5,000 troops Suggests permanent conquest was intended at this time – base for invasion of Highlands? Abandoned incomplete c.86/7 AD Buildings were dismantled and 750,000 iron nails were buried
