Students must comprehend the story in order to answer the questions and write the essay on the weekly test. Please go over the story on weekly tests to see your child’s comprehension skills. This week we will be learning to “annotate” the stories in order to help with comprehension. You will see evidence of this on upcoming tests. Writing: This week we will be continuing to write in response to hurricane stories. The focus will be on using the RACE strategy for paragraph writing. We will work on verbs as well. Please be sure to look at the back page of weekly tests to see the writing progress. I promise it will get better  Spelling: Spelling words are written into student planners every Monday and this week will focus on LONG A. Homework will be assigned on these words each week. No call out spelling tests will occur, but students will be asked to search for words in a story that use the same vowel patterns as their words on their weekly reading tests. Each week they will earn points for this spelling exercise and points will be totaled for a final grade at the end of the 9 weeks. Important Reminders Test folders are sent home every Tuesday to be reviewed, signed, then returned by Thursday. NO SCHOOL MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 3RD-LABOR DAY! Make-up tests will be given during “ART” time on Tuesdays. This prevents students from missing additional instruction in core subjects while making up the test.
