1 Resources Mrs. Lehner Mr. McCollum

2 Law of Conservation of Matter
Matter cannot be created nor destroyed Atoms are always accounted for Remember atom inventory?!?!?!

3 Everything on this planet is composed of a combination of the about 90 elements found in nature – including you!! ·   Each element is composed of atoms of the same type ·  Different elements are composed of different types of atoms

4 ATOMS VS. MOLECULES Atoms – The atom is the smallest part of the simplest form of matter. Elements – The simplest form of matter ·             Molecules – Two or more atoms bonded together (of the same or different elements) – like O2 or like H20

5 2H2 + O2 2H2O Reactant: Starting Material, found on LEFT side of arrow Product: What is made, found on the RIGHT side of arrow Subscripts: little numbers, tell how many atoms of the element it follow (unless there are parenthesis) Coefficients: Big numbers in front of molecules, multiplied by everything after it, until you hit the end of the atom/molecule

6 LAW OF CONSERVATION OF MASS
Mass is NOT created or destroyed in a chemical reaction (so you better have the same number of atoms of each element before and after chemical reaction….or Mama Nature is going to be Mad!!)

7 Balancing Equations If matter cannot be created nor destroyed, then there has to the same amount of atoms in products and reactants

8 Practice __Zn + __HCl ----> __ZnCl2 + __H2
__CH4 + __O2 --> __CO2 + __H2O __Fe + __O2 ---> __Fe2O3 __NaCl + __BeF2 --> __NaF + __BeCl2

9 A.5 Resources Materials that can be withdrawn from the natural environment to satisfy human needs Renewable: Can be replenished through by natural processes Non-Renewable: Cannot be replenished or take long periods of time

10

11 Waste Waste: generated by anything we no longer need Limiting Waste
Ex: Cheerios Box, Newspaper Each person throws about 4 lb of stuff a day Limiting Waste Recycling: Reforming into new materials Re-using: Using the same materials Which is better??
