3 Specialized Terms: Colonialism
The practice or policy or exerting political control by one group from one territory over another group from another territory (colony) Diversity psychological, physical, and social differences that exist among all individuals. This may include ethnicity, nationality, religion, socioeconomic status, education, marital status, language, age, gender, sexual orientation, and mental or physical ability.

4 Ethnicity/ethnic group
a social construct that divides people into smaller social groups based on characteristics such as a shared sense of group membership, values, behavioral patterns, language, political and economic interests, history and ancestral geographical base Systemic vs systematic systemic means something that affects an entire process or organization whereas systematic means being carried out in a methodical, organized manner. Racism and discrimination can be both systemic and systematic.

7 Privilege What is the effect of ‘privilege’ on humanity in regards to diversity? Privilege Walk Activity 4 minutes Article “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” by Peggy McIntosh

8 Activity Once you have read the article:
Which of the 26 effects of privilege caused you to ponder your own reality the most? What is missing from this list? Are all white people privileged? Create your own ‘I’ statement(s) - something you may enjoy due to some source of privilege from which you benefit. (think of the definition of diversity) What are the sources of power in the world today? Have sources of power changed over time? Remained the same?

10 Why are some countries more ethnically diverse than others?
Where is the most diversity? Africa (the world’s 20 most diverse countries are here) - why? Which countries are ethnically homogenous? Europe – why? Diversity and conflict Diversity correlates with latitude and low GDP per capita Strong democracy correlates with ethnic homogeneity

IS A SENSE OF UNITY ESSENTIAL FOR A COUNTRY? How do forces of cultural diversity play into this notion of a country’s unity? Initial Position: Where along the U-shaped continuum did you first place yourself? Explain the reasons for your initial choice. 12 Interesting Arguments
Describe the reasons given by two students whose position on the U- shaped continuum was different from yours but caused you to wonder about or rethink your position. Position on the continuum: Reasons:

13 Final Position If you shifted along the U-shaped continuum during the discussion, in which direction did you shift? What caused you to make this shift? If you did not shift along the continuum, what additional arguments or evidence reinforced your position, causing you to stay in your original position? Explain the changes or continuity in your position along the U-continuum. Justify your final position: Explain the four most powerful reasons that support your final position.
