Presentation on theme: "What does this image show?"— Presentation transcript:

1 What does this image show?
This question is a sort of ‘warm up’ for the following set. It probes prior knowledge to make sure students recognize depictions of cells/nuclei/chromosomes during mitosis. This question may not be as useful if the sequence is used after the cell division chapter. As a matter of style, some instructors like to present a question before showing multiple choice selections as the cognitive response may be quite different.

2 What does this image show?
cutaway view of an organelle with its contents diagram of a eukaryotic cell showing different kinds of nucleii cells with condensed chromosomes during mitosis something to do with cells, but Im not sure what Answer = c

3 ? c. neither a. b. On this slide, you may wish to verbally point out that they are supposed to match a, b, or c to the circled item, although students find this quite straightforward. Answer = b Responses will probably be about 50:50 between answers a and b. Do not show the results. Do not give the correct answer, just move to next slide.

4 ? c. neither a. b. Answer = c Responses will probably be about 50:50 between answers b and c. Do not show the results. Do not give the correct answer, just move to next slide.

5 ? a. b. c. Answer = c Responses will probably be about 80-90% response c. Do not show the results. Do not give the correct answer, just move to next slide.

6 ? c. neither a. b. Answer = b Responses will probably be about 85-95% correct (b). You can go back over the other questions and discuss, but it is pretty evident to students once they’ve completed the sequence. I usually remind them about DNA being a double helix, and that when we use a representation other than a double helix (e.g. condensed chromosome like in these images), they must remember what it represents on the molecular scale, expecially in the cell cycle.
