Activities completed since CBSC16 Hydrographic Awareness Seminar Victoria, Seychelles 27 August 2018 IHO, IMO and IALA ‘delivering as one’ Hydrography and the Blue Economy A 1 day Hydrographic Awareness Seminar was held in Victoria, Seychelles in August Funding was provided to: Angola, Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, and Tanzania. IHO, IMO and IALA all presented to highlight the roles and responsibilities of states and to meet the UN goal of delivering as one. The focus of the seminar was hydrography and the blue economy and through the IHO supporting attendance at the SAIHC attendance was increased by approximately 20% 17th Capacity Building Sub-Committee (CBSC) Meeting, Genoa, Italy, 29 to 31 May 2019

Activities completed since CBSC16 High Level Visit to Angola – September 2018 MBES Processing and Data Base Training for Mozambique – November 2018 Activities completed since CBSC16 High Level Visit to Angola – September 2018 – This goes some way to assisting the Angolan Hydrographic Authorities in showcasing the importance of hydrography and IHO membership. Activities planned for 2019 MSI Course – Hosted by Mauritius, delivered by NGA 22-24 October Hydrographic Awareness Seminar - Cape Town, South Africa September 2019 Focus on Risk assessment and analysis Looking forward to 2019. 2 CB activities in the SAIHC region secured funding these are: Focus on risk in 2019 the SAIHC region, in particular Mozambique has suffered significant challengnes from cyclones. The HAS has the opportunity to focus on risk assessment in support of reacting to these challenges 17th Capacity Building Sub-Committee (CBSC) Meeting, Genoa, Italy, 29 to 31 May 2019

Challenges faced in the region Communication – Limited opportunities for engagement Environmental – Cyclone Idai & Kenneth Maritime Security The region has a number of challenges. Communication is often limited with few opportunities for engagement which is why there is so much value in the hydrographic Awareness seminars. Environmental challenges such as the recent cyclones leave a trail of destruction hindering development and impacting hydrography. Achievements and Lessons learned Increased RHC attendance by 20% Seychelles became the 88th member of the IHO Capacity building support in the region is vitally important and is assisted by Member states supporting the development of the hydrographic services of developing states. Through IHO CB support as I mentioned attendance at the last Regional Hydrographic commission meeting was increased by approximately 20% And it is also important to note that the Seychelles became the 88th member of the IHO. 17th Capacity Building Sub-Committee (CBSC) Meeting, Genoa, Italy, 29 to 31 May 2019
