1 Which Law? Torah encompasses Genesis through Deuteronomy History
Prophecy Commandments Holiness regulations Land related Centralized worship/priests/sacrifices Moral/”Spiritual” Blessings and curses

2 What was the Context for the Law?
The Covenant with Abraham God heard their groaning, and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. Ex 2:24 Passover/Redemption from Egypt ‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself. Ex 19:4 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Ex. 20:3

3 What was the purpose? A Holy People A Kingdom A Priestly Nation
Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.” Exodus. 19:5-6

4 The Hedge of the Law

5 The Hedge of the Law I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live. Deuteronomy 30:19 (NKJV)

6 Why this Hedge? Maintaining Holiness in: Worship Family Community

7 Jews – Kept Confined Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed.  So then, the law was our guardian until The Messiah came, 3:23-24  I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no different from a slave, though he is the owner of everything,  but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by his father.  In the same way we also, when we were children, were enslaved to the elementary principles of the world. Gal. 4:1-3

8 A New Movement in History “From the days of John the Baptist until now the Kingdom of Heaven has been taken by storm and eager men are forcing their way into it. For the Law and all the prophets foretold ituntil the time of John ...” Matthew 11:12-13 J.B. Phillips NT

9 Sheep in an Enclosure

10 The Great Escape I will surely assemble all of you, O Jacob, I will
Surely gather the remnant of Israel; I will put Them together like sheep of the fold, like a flock in themidst of their pasture; They shall make a Loud noise because of so many people. The one Who breaks open (poretz) will come up before them; They will break out (paretz), pass through The gate, and go out by it; Their King will pass Before them, with the Lord at their head.” Micah 2:12-13 (NKJV)

11 Jews – Under the Law Paul was a strict Torah-observant Pharisee
All Jews were under the Law given through Moses Jesus, a Jew, was born under the Law  ”But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law ...” Gal. 4:4-5

12 Cancelled Obligation ... those who received the temple tax came to Peter and said, “Does your Teacher not pay the temple tax?”  He said, “Yes.”And when he had come into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth take customs or taxes, from their sons or from strangers?”  Peter said to Him, “From strangers.” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are free.  Nevertheless, lest we offend them, go to the sea, cast in a hook, and take the fish that comes up first. And when you have opened its mouth, you will find a piece of money; take that and give it to them for Me and you.” Matt. 17:24-27

13 Who owns the pronouns? “We/Us/Our” - Paul and the Galatian Jews
We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners;   yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified. But if, in our endeavour to be justified in Christ, we too were found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not! 2:15-17

14 Who owns the pronouns? “I/Me” - Paul the Jew and Torah-observant Pharisee  For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor. For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.  I do not nullify The grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose. Gal. 2:18-21

15 Who owns the pronouns? “We/Us/Our” – Paul and the Galatian Jewish Believers  But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.”  Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us - for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree” Gal. 2:12-13 Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed.  So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith.  But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian. 3:23-25

16 A Temporary Expedient ... the law, which came 430 years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to make the promise void.  For if the inheritance comes by the law, it no longer comes by promise; but God gave it to Abraham by a promise. 3:17-18 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law,  to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 4:4-5

17 God’s Solution   “For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God.  I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.  I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing! 2:19-21

18 God’s Solution  “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah -  not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers ...  But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.  ... they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.” Jer. 31:31-34

19 Circumcision And God said to Abraham: “As for you, you shall keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations. This is My covenant which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: Every male child among you shall be circumcised;  and you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between Me and you. And the uncircumcised male child, who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that person shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.” Gen. 17:9-11, 14

20 Circumcision  Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers) John 7:22 Paul wanted Timothy to accompany him, and he took him and circumcised him (Timothy) because of the Jews who were in those places, for they all knew that his father was a Gentile. Acts 16:3

21 Gentiles live Under a Different Law
Idolatry (Demon worship) Pagan Rules and Rituals/Superstition Alien spiritual powers Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods.  But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more?  You observe days and months and seasons and years! Gal. 4:8-10

22 “You” - Jews and Gentiles Together
Both conditions of “Under the Law” are abolished in the Messiah Jesus ... for in Messiah Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into the Messiah have put on The Messiah. Gal. 3:26

29 The Shared Blessings The Gift of the Spirit
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith. 3:13-14

30 Jews and Gentiles remain Distinct
There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 3:28 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but a new creation. And as many as walk according to this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God. 6:15-16

31 But One in Christ You are all one in Christ Jesus ... Heirs according to the promise 3:28-29 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 3:27

32 The Law (OT) Remains Very Useful
It reveals Who God is – His “Autobiography” The Story of Salvation History Types and Shadows of the New Covenant Promises about the Coming Messiah Godly Wisdom Prophecy still to be fulfilled Examples of how to love God and Neighbour

33 The Tanach is still God’s Word
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,  that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2Tim. 3:16-17 Each and every isolated detail? As a whole (a total integrated package)?

34 We do keep the Law – but Accidentally!
For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbour as yourself. 5:14

35 Pitfalls to Avoid Love Israel but don’t be a “Pretend Jew”
Delight in all the Scriptures but beware of false “Torah Studies” Two-Covenant Theology is a heresy to be resisted

36 A New Way of Living It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.
Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. 5:1 Walk in the Spirit, and you will not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 5:16

37 Relationship replaces Religion
Live by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh. 5:16 Overcome by the Spirit “For the flesh has desires that are opposed to the Spirit, and the Spirit has desires that are opposed to the flesh, for these are in opposition to each other, so that you cannot do what you want”. 5:17 “If you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law”. 5:18

38 Relationship replaces Religion
Live like the Spirit. “If we live by the Spirit, let us also behave in accordance with the Spirit”. 5:25 Love one another “Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, being jealous of one another”. 5:26 “ Through love serve one another,  for the whole law can be summed up in a single commandment, namely, “You must love your neighbour as yourself.” 5:13-14

39 Ingredients for a Holy Life
Faith “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision carries any weight—the only thing that matters is faith working through love”. 5:6 Love “For the whole law can be summed up in a single commandment, namely, “You must love your neighbour as yourself.” 5:14 The Spirit “But I say, live by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh”. 5:16

40 The Fruit of the Spirit For the whole law can be summed up in a single commandment, namely, “You must love your neighbour as yourself.”  5:14 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 5:22-23 “I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me - and I in him - bears much fruit, because apart from me you can accomplish nothing. John 15:5

41 The Works of the Flesh are Obvious
Sexual immorality, impurity, depravity,  idolatry, sorcery, hostilities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish rivalries, dissensions, factions, envying, murder, drunkenness, carousing, and similar things. I am warning you, as I had warned you before: Those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God! Gal. 5:19-21 No special revelation of the Law is required It’s “No-Brainer”! Don’t do it!

42 An Exhilarating Adventure
For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity to indulge your flesh, but through love serve one another. 5:13 Spirit Live by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh. 5:16 Flesh Liberty Licence

43 An Exhilarating Adventure
Spirit  If you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 5:18 For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not be subject again to the yoke of slavery.  Religious Regulations Liberty Legalism

45 Onward and Upward For we through the Spirit eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. Gal. 5:5 One thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Phil. 3:13-14
