2 The Republic of India

3 India used to be ruled by Great Britain

4 India formed its own gov’t in 1950
India copies the gov’t of Great Britain since it used to be ruled by Great Britain

5 The Republic of India (con’td)
Has a parliament, like the UK Prime minister is the head of gov’t who has the power

6 India has a “president” with no power – he’s just a ceremonial leader (just performs ceremonies…)

7 The Republic of India India’s citizens have many rights and freedoms
People can vote at the age of 18

8 Like the U. S. , India has states
Like the U.S., India has states. India’s federal gov’t gives away much power to its many states.

9 The People’s Republic of China

10 The People’s Republic of China
Communist government: run by Chinese Communist Party (the CCP). Therefore it’s a communist oligarchy. REAL head of gov’t is the premier Has National People’s Congress (but its members are selected by CCP)

11 China’s communist government was formed in 1949.

Has a “pretend president” whose position is mostly ceremonial This is called a ceremonial leader

14 The People’s Republic of China
When the people of China “vote,” it’s meaningless – because the gov’t tells them how to vote People have very few freedoms – they can’t speak or worship like they want.

16 Japan still has an emperor
Japan still has an emperor. A country with a king, queen, or emperor is called a monarchy.

17 The United Kingdom is a monarchy.

Has a parliament called the Diet (which elects the PM) Still has an emperor The prime minister is the real head of gov’t
