2 God’s Salvation (Part 2)

3 Discovering Salvation
1 Timothy 1:15 Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners--of whom I am the worst.

4 This study will have three parts:
Part 1 = The Definition, Need, Basis and Nature of Salvation Part 2 = The Application and Results of Salvation Part 3 = More Results, Assurance, and Climax of Salvation TODAY

5 Let’s review PART ONE

6 I. Definition of Salvation
Salvation includes all God does to rescue mankind from sin and its con-sequences. This includes: Faith Calling Conversion Regeneration Reconciliation Repentance Union Redemption Atonement Justification Grace Imputation Forgiveness Mercy Sanctification Perseverance Election Adoption Assurance

7 II. Need for Salvation We are helpless to initiate salvation.
We need a Savior to come rescue us from our sin and its consequences! So God sent us a Savior (1 Tim 1:15) …

8 III. Basis of Salvation God’s choice to save us
Father chose us in Christ before time: ELECTION (Eph 1:4) Christ chose to die for us in time: REDEMPTION (Eph 1:7) Spirit chose to regenerate us at His time: REGENERATION (John 3:8)

9 IV. Nature of Salvation Involves a substitute sacrifice
Involves a gift of grace and mercy

10 The Application and Results of Salvation
PART TWO The Application and Results of Salvation

11 I. The Application of Salvation

12 1--CALLING: General Call …
an invitation to faith in Jesus Christ as Savior through preaching (Ac 17:30)

13 1--CALLING: General Call …
Acts 17:30 In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.

14 1--CALLING: General Call …
Isaiah 45:22 Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other.

15 1--CALLING: Efficacious Call …
an invitation to faith in Christ that infallibly brings this result (Ro 8:30; 1 Cor 1:9; John 11:43 )

16 1--CALLING: Efficacious Call … Fore- known
Rom 8:29, 30 For those God foreknew he also predestined And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified. Pre- destine CALLED Justified Glorified

17 1--CALLING: Efficacious Call … Fore- known
Romans 11:29 for God's gifts and his call are irrevocable. Pre- destine CALLED Justified Glorified

18 2--REGENERATION: is the instantaneous act of the Holy Spirit whereby new life is imparted to the one whom the Father has chosen and Spirit efficaciously called DEAD IN SIN -- Eph. 2:1

19 2--REGENERATION: is the instantaneous act of the Holy Spirit whereby new life is imparted to the one whom the Father has chosen and Spirit efficaciously called ALIVE IN HIM Eph. 2:5

20 3--CONVERSION: The term conversion means “to turn” (both in Greek and Hebrew). 1 Thes. 1:9 “They tell how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God,”

21 3--CONVERSION: The term conversion means “to turn” (both in Greek and Hebrew). Two aspect:

22 3--CONVERSION: The term conversion means “to turn” (both in Greek and Hebrew). Two aspect: Turn Turn FROM TO

23 3--CONVERSION: The term conversion means “to turn” (both in Greek and Hebrew). Two aspect: REPENT FAITH

24 A. REPENTANCE Repentance is the voluntary act of a person turning from sin Greek “metanoew” = change of mind; the turning is a result of a change of mind!

25 A. REPENTANCE There are three elements:
Intellectual – change of view; in my mind I view it differently Emotional – change of feelings; in my heart I feel differently Volitional – will – change of purpose; I choose differently

26 A. REPENTANCE Repentance is a gift of grace Acts 11:18 "So then, God has granted even the Gentiles repentance unto life."

27 B. FAITH Faith is the voluntary act of a person turning to Christ!

28 B. FAITH Three elements:
Intellectual – recognition of the truth (notitia) Emotional – a deep conviction of the truth (assensus) Volitional – will – acting on the truth = personal trust in Christ as Lord and Savior (fiducia)

29 Charles Blondin (Jean Francois Gravelet; 1824-97)

30 Faith and the Word: Faith come from hearing
Romans 10:17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.

31 Content of Faith: I Cor. 15:2 By this gospel you are saved, … 3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins … 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,

32 Content of Faith: CONFESS BELIEVE
Romans 10:9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. BELIEVE

33 Repentance and Faith Are two sides of the same coin
You can’t have one without the other! Both are gifts from God!

34 II. Results of Salvation

35 1--Union with Christ Union means “to be made one with Christ” so that Christ’s work is attributed to the person united to Him. (Rom 6:5) Resurrection Death Burial Christ Me

36 2--Justification Justification is the judicial declaration that the believer is righteous based upon union with Christ (Ro 4:3-5, ; 5:18,19)

37 2--Justification Basis:
Imputation: Charging our sin to Christ (2 Cor 5:21). Charging His righteousness to us! RIGHTEOUSNESS

38 2--Justification 2 Cor 5:21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. RIGHTEOUSNESS

39 2--Justification Means: GRACE By “grace” (Romans 3:24)
Through “faith” (Rom 5:1; Gal 2:16) GRACE JUSTIFIED

40 2--Justification Results:
Forgiveness = FULL pardon, the judicial acquittal of sin (forgive- ness of sin) based upon just- ification (Ro 4:25)

49 Discovery 107-B Discovering God’s Salvation Prepared by Dennis Henderson, D. Min.
INTRODUCTION: 1 Timothy 1:15 Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners--of whom I am the worst. This study will have three parts: Part 1 = The Definition, Need, Basis and Nature of Salvation Part 2: The Application and Results of Salvation (Let’s Review Last Week) TODAY: The Application of Salvation 1--CALLING: A. General Call … an invitation to faith in Jesus Christ as Savior through preaching (Ac 17:30) Acts 17:30 In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. Isaiah 45:22 Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other. (This general call, unlike the efficacious call, may be refused by the listener) B. Efficacious Call … an invitation to faith in Christ that infallibly brings this result (Ro 8:30; 1 Cor 1:9; John 11:43 = pictures a divine summoning against which the dead man could neither respond on his own nor refuse to obey because it was God who willed him to come!) Rom 8:29, 29 For those God foreknew he also predestined And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified. Romans 11:29 for God's gifts and his call are irrevocable.

50 2—REGENERATION … is the instantaneous act of the Holy Spirit whereby is imparted to the one whom the Father has chosen and Spirit efficaciously called [See notes on the Holy Spirit – Discovery 103C] 3—CONVERSION … The term conversion means “to turn” (both in the Greek and the Hebrew). 1 Thes. 1:9 “They tell how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God,” Two aspect: Turn from Turn to Repent Faith A. First Aspect: Repentance … is the voluntary act of a person turning from sin Greek word for ”repent” is “metanoew” = change of mind; the turning is a result of a change of mind! There are three elements: Intellectual – change of view; in my mind I view it differently Emotional – change of feelings; in my heart I feel differently Volitional – will – change of purpose; I choose differently Repentance is a gift of grace Acts 11:18 "So then, God has granted even the Gentiles repentance unto life.“ B. Second Aspect: FAITH … is the voluntary act of a person turning to Christ! Three elements: Intellectual – recognition of the truth (in Latin this aspect is called notitia) Emotional – a deep conviction of the truth (in Latin this aspect is called assensus) Volitional – will – acting on the truth = personal trust in Christ as Lord and Savior (in Latin this aspect is called fiducia from which we get the term fiduciary trust)

51 Illustration: Charles Blondin (Jean Francois Gravelet; ) who crossed the Niagara Falls on a tight wire. Legend tells us that upon reaching the other side he asked his audience if they “believed” that he could do it again. To which the responded favorably. He asked do you believe that I could do it again with someone on my back? To which a gentle man shouted “I believe!” So Blondin asked, “If you truly believe, then come get on my back.” To which the gentleman said, “No, sir, I believe you can do it but I don’t trust you.Now imagine that you were in that man’s place. And you actually climbed upon Blondins’s back and proceeded with him across the Niagara Falls. You would be trusting him completely for your salvation from falling to death below. So it is with trusting Jesus alone to save you and take you to heaven. [1] Faith and the Word: Faith come from hearing Romans 10:17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ. Therefore, we share the message for people to come to faith. That message has content: [2] Content of Faith: I Cor. 15:2 By this gospel you are saved, … 3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins … 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, Romans 10:9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. [3] Repentance and Faith Are two sides of the same coin You can’t have one without the other! Both are gifts from God! II. Results of Salvation 1--Union with Christ … means “to be made one with Christ” so that Christ’s work is attributed to the person united to Him. (Rom 6:5) Therefore, What Christ did is accounted to us!

52 II. Results of Salvation
2—Justification … Justification is the judicial declaration that the believer is righteous based upon union with Christ (Ro 4:3- 5, 22-25; 5:18,19) A. Basis: Imputation = Charging our sin to Christ (2 Cor 5:21 )Like a credit card transaction. Our sins were charged to Christ who paid the price for sin =Charging His righteousness to us! We received the goods for which Christ paid the price—righteousness that allows us to be accepted by God. 2 Cor 5:21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. B. Means: By “grace” (Romans 3:24) Through “faith” (Rom 5:1; Gal 2:16) In order to come to this salvation we must go through the door of faith. Faith does not save us—it is the door though which we must pass to acquire salvation. C. Results: Forgiveness = FULL pardon, the judicial acquittal of sin. 1] Not guilty (forgiven = release of obligation to satisfy the just demand of God of death [Romans 6:23]) and 2] Righteous (in Christ= Christ’s righteousness imputed to the guilty and pardoned sinner) Conclusion: Next Time: PART THREE: MORE Results of Salvation Adoption and Sanctification Assurance of Salvation Perseverance and Preservation Climax of Salvation ASSIGNMENT: Memorize: 2 Thessalonians 2:13 Read:
