Overview

Erasmus+ overview Erasmus+ is the European Union programme for education, training, youth and sport It runs for seven years, from 2014 to 2020 It provides funding to send and receive students and staff from our European partners In 2015 a new action was introduced that enables us to apply for funding for mobility with partner institutions beyond Europe – known as International Credit Mobility (ICM) Talk about your own experience of Erasmus/Erasmus+ eg *Insert HEI name* has taken part since xxxx
5
ICM Overview ICM supports European Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to co-operate and exchange students and staff with the wider world, outside Europe Similar activities as the core Erasmus+ programme - offers exciting opportunities for student study (and now traineeships), staff teaching and training Similar benefits in terms of grant funding Do not need an already-established partnership with an overseas HEI in order to apply ICM funds both incoming and outgoing students and staff and provides a contribution to administrative costs (organisational support) Students can carry out traineeships in 2018 Call We will need to sign an inter-institutional agreement before any mobility activity can take place. We can restrict our application to staff mobilities only or student mobility only if we wish

9
Funding cont’d Eligible students going from the UK to Partner Countries receive a monthly grant of €700 and staff a daily contribution of €180 per day. Both students and staff also receive a travel contribution based on the distance they are travelling. In addition the two institutions taking part in the exchange share a contribution of €350 in organisational support per mobile participant) for both incoming and outgoing students and staff. Offers an additional stream of funding to help even more students in both the UK and the partner countries benefit from an international experience. This is especially true for those whose personal circumstances might make it harder for them to participate OS- €350 is up to the first 100 participants; €200 for any additional participants
10
Benefits
11
Why Take Part Offer an additional funding opportunity for activity with our current partners Provide an expanded international offering Increase the opportunities for staff and student mobility to travel overseas Foster new relationships and strengthen current partnerships Bring the outside world into our institution with incoming students and staff Support staff mobility/professional development to establish strong connections with new institutions for future courses and partnerships
12
Why Take Part cont’d Raise awareness of our institution with international students Promote the idea of mobility to our home students Use pre-existing partnerships developed through the Tempus, Erasmus Mundus and other programmes to expand our offering Act as a ‘soft trial’ for partners and international mobility beyond Erasmus+
13
Why Take Part cont’d Focus on countries where staff and students are less able to spend time overseas due to the costs of travelling to a high cost country such as the UK Engage with new fields of international research Contribute to academic understanding across a range of subjects, knowledge transfer and the sharing of UK best practice with HEIs in other parts of the world. Support visits to multiple universities as part of the project Developing new links may then lead to student mobility opportunities in the future
14
How to take part Annual Call – deadline 1 February 2018
Discuss with the Erasmus/International office When applying, read the European Commission’s 'Dos and don'ts for higher education institutions' ICM applicant’s guide at Talk about your own HEI’s process and any briefing sessions Discuss with the Erasmus office, as each HEI submits one central application

Case study 1 “We were aware that there would be fierce competition for some countries, especially where funding was limited, but wanted to make an application that also embraced new opportunities. We focussed our time and resource on countries where staff and students are less able to spend time overseas due to the costs of travelling to a high cost country such as the UK.” Gail Armistead, Associate Director, International Office, the University of Nottingham
17
Case study 2 "The funding will not only provide grants to Middlesex students and staff for study, teaching and training visits to partner universities, it will also allow Middlesex to welcome students and staff from these partners to the university to contribute new socio-cultural perspectives to enrich its research and teaching. This enhances the student experience and engagement with new fields of international research.” Dr Nosheen Rachel-Naseem, Erasmus and International Exchange Manager, Middlesex University
