1 Lesson: Lines horizontal intersecting vertical parallel

2 Objectives By the end of this unit, students should be able to:
Identify and name different types of lines (horizontal, vertical, parallel, inclined) Draw different types of line (horizontal, vertical, parallel, inclined)

3 Activity 1: Lines Join points A to B, C to D, E to F and G to H.
a) Using a pencil only b) Using a pencil and a ruler Note: Teacher to make students draw a) and b)

4 Brainstorm on Definition of Lines
What do you observe when you joined the points: (a) using a pencil only? (b) using a pencil and a ruler? Note: Teacher to brainstorm with students on the difference between the lines in a) and b)

5 Definition of Lines Lines: (i) are straight
(ii) have no thickness, and (iii) can be drawn in both directions without end. Note: Teacher should mention that no thickness mean no widths and that a line “can be drawn in both directions without end” mean that we can continue the line as long as there is space.

6 Activity 2: Parallel Lines
Observe the pairs of lines, (1) and (2), below and extend the lines on both sides using a ruler. What can you see? (1) (2) Note: Teacher to give the above drawing on paper for each student to practice.

7 Parallel Lines Lines that are at the same distance apart are called parallel lines. They never meet each other in whichever direction they are continued, whether forward or backward.

8 Consolidation work Repeat the same activity for the pairs of lines (3) and (4). Which pair of lines are parallel lines? (3) (4)

9 Consolidation work Repeat the same activity for the pairs of lines (5) and (6). Which pair of lines are not parallel lines? (5) (6)

10 Consolidation work Which lines form a pair of parallel lines? P Q R S
A. Lines PQ and RS B. Lines PQ and PR C. Lines PR and QS D. Lines RS and QS

11 Consolidation work Observe the lines below and complete with 'parallel' or 'not parallel'. 1. 1. Parallel 2. Not Parallel

12 Consolidation work Observe the lines below and complete with 'parallel' or 'not parallel'. 2. 1. Parallel 2. Not Parallel

13 Intersecting Lines When two lines are not parallel, they will meet at one point. This pair of lines is called Intersecting Lines.

14 Consolidation work Observe the lines below and complete with 'parallel' or ‘intersecting'. 3. A. Parallel B. Intersecting

15 Consolidation work Observe the lines below and complete with 'parallel' or ‘Intersecting'. 4. A. Parallel B. Intersecting

16 Horizontal Line Observe the following picture

17 Consolidation work Draw two lines parallel to the horizon on the picture (use your ruler). Horizon

18 Activity 3: Vertical Line
Do you see any vertical line or horizontal line in the table and door below? Note: Existing furniture and structure within the class can be used to introduce vertical line.

19 Vertical Line The legs of the table and the door frame form a line which are vertical.

20 Consolidation work Qu. 1. The flag post forms a line which is said to be vertical. Draw two lines parallel to the flag post (use your ruler). Note: Students can draw the flag from their experience of morning assembly.

21 Consolidation work Qu. 2. The line shown is? Vertical Horizontal

22 Consolidation work Qu. 3. The sign post is? Horizontal Vertical

23 Activity 4: Inclined lines
Step 1: Students are paired. Step 2: Students are asked to place their ruler against their water bottles as follows. (note that the ruler is placed on the left side of the water bottle) Step 3: Ask the students what type of line does the ruler represent. Note: Teacher mentions that another name for inclination is Slant.

24 Activity 4: Inclined Lines
Step 4: A second set of ruler/bottle is placed and the students are allowed to observe the slant.

25 Inclined Lines

26 Consolidation Work Draw 2 different incline lines in each of the following. An inclined line An inclined line

27 Activity 5: Lines Notes: The teacher will ask students to draw a house, after which a brainstorming session will emphasize on the type of lines used and their properties. This can be used to conclude on the learnings of the lesson.

28 End of the Section/Lesson : Lines
