Avoiding eye contact Eye contact is not a sign of honesty or confidence; rather, it is a way of challenging or threatening another. Having direct eye contact with someone of a higher status is considered especially impolite. Expressionless face This usually indicates a lack of understanding of a question or circumstance, or not knowing how to respond to a question. Straight-backed posture An upright posture shows that an individual is taking things seriously and has had a good upbringing. In fact, the line of the back indicates good character to the Japanese.
