ALGEBRA VOCABULARY Mrs. Carre Seconary 2
2
TERM Definition: A part of an expression that is separated by an addition or subtraction sign. Examples: In the expression 2x – 4 the terms are 2x and – 4.
3
CONSTANT TERM Definition: A single number. Examples: 5 -3 8.26
4
COEFFICIENT Definition: Examples:
A coefficient is the factor in front of the variable or variables of a term. Examples: In the algebraic expression x – 8xy + 7.3y, 1, -8 and 7.3 are the coefficients of the first, second, and third terms, respectively. ***NOTE: x is the same as 1x
5
VARIABLE Definition: A symbol, usually a letter, that is used to represent one or more numbers in an algebraic expression. Example: a, b, x 4a + 3 3b + 2 6x + 2
6
LIKE TERMS Definition: Contain the same variables raised to the same exponents, or are both constant terms. Examples: 4b and -5b 6xy2 and 7xy2 12 and 7
7
MONOMIAL Definition: An algebraic expression consisting of only one term. Examples: 4x 2 -x 16x2
8
DEGREE OF ONE VARIABLE MONOMIALS
Definition The degree of one variable monomials corresponds to the exponent on the variable. Example: -2x3 the degree is 3
9
DEGREE OF MONOMIALS WITH MANY VARIABLES
Definition The degree of a monomial with many variables is equal to the sum of the exponents given to the variables making up this monomial. Example: -3x2y3 is a monomial with two variables x and y its degree is 5 (2+3)
10
BINOMIAL Definition: A polynomial that has two terms. Examples: 4x +1
11
POLYNOMIAL Definition: An expression that has one or more terms of the form axn where a is any real number and n is a whole number. Examples: 4x +1 3x2 + 2x +1
