3 The Industrial Revolution
The factory system introduces mass production in the North. It begins out of necessity. Great Britain’s war of 1812 ruins our trade economy, and we must work domestically. This is the beginning of industrialization in the United States.

4 New England Economy Sam Slater creates first textile factory in Rhode Island. It was illegal to remove British plans for factories, so he memorized the plans and moved to the United States. Only produced thread, but it leads to additional industrialization Francis C. Lowell opens a factory in Massachusetts that mechanized all stages of cloth production.

5 Agriculture in the North and the South
Northern farms tended to be smaller scale, producing necessary goods. Slavery dies out in the region by Southern Farms focused on cotton production. The crop requires a large number of slaves, and long staple cotton was easier to remove seeds from.

6 True impact of the Cotton Gin
The Cotton Gin, invented by Eli Whitney, would change cotton production. Now plantations could grow short- staple cotton in larger numbers, and while it is harder to remove the seeds by hand, the Cotton Gin would do it mechanically. Typically machines lower the number of workers, but in this case, so many people began growing cotton it increased the number of slaves in the region. ,000 bales ,000 bales

7 The American System Henry Clay proposes a system to modernize and advance the United States Develop a transportation system National Road Erie Canal Railroad System Establishing a tariff to protect American manufacturing Northern states loved it Southern states did not like the higher prices. Resurrecting the National Bank

8 Increasing Sectionalism
