Supporting All Readers

Process of determining level of supports needed + a way to keep it organized
Team Structure We started by talking about examples from elementary, middle school and high school where teams are working successfully to support all of their readers. We thought we would be presenting 3 examples today, but we noticed a couple of things: All of the successful examples had a common structure with one difference. All of the successful examples had 2 organized areas: process to systematically identify struggling students and an organized, even if loosely, team structure.
3
Identifying Student Needs
Explain differences between 3 types of levels.
4
Identifying Student Needs
Explain range of expectations
5
Explain the difference between elementary and middle/high school process. Elementary don’t screen - they assess everyone.
7
Draw attention to first step of screening.
8
Universal Screening Looking at 2 areas: Comprehension Word Accuracy
Use the table on the handout to explain screening using different tools.

Moving from Identifying to Supporting
What supports are in place for these students? Who teaches them? Where do they teach them? When do they teach them? What do they teach them? (Strategies) First 3 points are all about team structure and last one is about strategies that need to be taught. We are going to focus now on the team structure part. We can learn/look up up strategies all we want, but if we don’t have the proper structure, the strategies won’t make as much of a difference.
