What is it? Romans 4:1-5 “What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness Justification is a legal declaration of righteousness
3
How do we get it? Romans 5:1 “we have been justified by faith”
Galatians 2:16 “Yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified” Justification is received by faith
4
How is this possible? Phil 3:2 “being found in him, hot having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith” Romans 5:19 “For as by one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous”
5
How is this possible? Romans 3:23-26 ““For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.”
6
How is this possible? Romans 4:25 “…who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification” Justification is based on the perfect obedience, substitutionary death, and victorious resurrection of Jesus
7
What does it do? Romans 8:33-34 “Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is god who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us” Romans 5:1 “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ Justification permanently removes our guilt and gives us peace with God
8
Clarifications: Don’t confuse the favor of God with the pleasure of God There is a big difference between being “declared” righteous and being “made” righteous.
9
Why Does It Matter? Even if we were made perfect at salvation and never sinned again, it still wouldn’t be enough to save us It is 100% impossible for you to fall back under God’s wrath You may feel guilty, but it’s nothing more than a feeling There is no other religion in the world that teaches this!
