1 IUFRO and international cooperation
International Union of Forest Research Organizations IUFRO and international cooperation Brussels, 5 February 2019 SCAR FOREST/CASA Workshop on International cooperation in research and innovation for the future European forest-based sector

3 ABOUT IUFRO : Main features
IUFRO is the leading global research network for forests and people. One of the World’s oldest international scientific organizations (1892): a witness of the need for international cooperation. The IUFRO network unites more than 15,000 scientists in over 630 Member Organizations in more than 120 countries. IUFRO addresses key global and regional challenges and strives to create solutions from a forest-based perspective.

4 ABOUT IUFRO : Strategic themes / goals

7 ABOUT IUFRO : Special Programmes
Special Programme for Development of Capacities (SPDC) World Forests, Society and Environment (WFSE) CPF Initiative: Global Forest Information Service (GFIS) CPF Initiative: Global Forest Expert Panels (GFEP)

8 THE WEIGHT OF GLOBAL CHALLENGES
Sustainable Development Goals (2015) United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and its Paris Agreement (2015) United Nations Strategic Plan for Forests (2017, 6 goals)  IUFRO is one of the 14 members of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF)

9 Global Forest Expert Panel (GFEP)
IUFRO-led initiative of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) since 2006 Supports forest-related intergovernmental processes by producing assessment reports on emerging global issues of high concern Establishes thematic Expert Panels involving leading scientists Feeds assessment results into discussions and negotiations in international forums related to forest policy (UNFF, FAO, UNFCCC, CBD, UNCCD…) Examples on climate change, forests and water, food security, biodiversity. Next study probably on “Forests and sustainable livelihoods” It involves the creation of income and employment in Europe.

10 World Forests, Society & Environment (WFSE)
Focus on synthesizing topics that have not received adequate attention from the policy community Currently carrying out a comprehensive assessment of potential impacts of efforts towards attaining different Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on forest-related livelihoods and development. Identification of synergies and trade-offs within and among SDGs from the viewpoint of forest goods and services There is a (research) need to better understand these trade-offs and synergies. This will require scientific cooperation and coordinated research efforts.

11 CONCLUSIONS FOR SCAR FOREST/IUFRO
This overview shows where and how IUFRO is contributing to shape and use science. Stronger efforts are needed to improve coherence and coordination of research across different levels, and especially between Europe and the global level. This Workshop has an important role in this regards, especially in the will to broaden the scope of international cooperation. IUFRO has interest in contributing to further work of SCAR.
