Molar Volume Chapter 7-2
2
STP The volume of a gas varies with a change in temperature or/and a change in pressure. The volume of a gas is usually measured at a Standard Temperature and Pressure (STP). Standard Temp = 0 0C 273 K Standard Pressure = 1 atm 101.3 kPa 760 Torr
3
Molar Volume At STP, 1 mol of any gas occupies a volume of 22.4 L. This is known as molar volume of a gas. At STP 1 mol = 22.4 L
4
Sample Problem Determine the volume, in liters, of mol SO2 gas at STP.
5
Sample Problem Determine the volume of 2.56 x molecules of nitrogen gas at STP.
6
Sample Problem Calculate the mass, in grams, of 3.56 Liters of chlorine gas at STP
