1 Basics of the Periodic Table

2 Entrance Slip: 1/28/19 1. On the images below label the following: -Mass Number -Atomic Mass -Atomic Number -Isotope Symbol 2. What happens after an electron changes to a higher energy quantum number? 3. What are the properties of electromagnetic radiation?

3 I can explain the key properties of a periodic table Which includes:
Objective: I can explain the key properties of a periodic table Which includes: -Period -Group -Nonmetal -Metal -Metalloid -Key groups

4 How is the periodic table organized?
-Discuss with your groups -Identify characteristics that may be used to organize the elements

5 How was the periodic table created?
1) Organized by Atomic Mass Are there any exceptions to this on the periodic table?

6 How is it actually organized? -Atomic Number, from lowest to highest

7 Cross Off: 6 squares

8 Period -The PT term for row -7 total rows

9 2. Group -PT term for column -18 total -A and B

10 Group B -Transition Elements -Groups 3-12

11 3. Metals

12 Metals -Good conductors of heat and electricity -Luster
-All solid at room temperature but mercury -ductile -Malleable

13 4. Nonmetals

14 Nonmetals -Most are gases at room temperature
-Minus: Phosphorus, Sulfur, and Bromine (ssl) -All but Carbon are poor conductors

15 Add the staircase

16 5. Metalloids

17 Metalloids -Characteristics of both -Depends on changing conditions
-Ex Silicon is not a good conductor, if you add Boron then it is

18 What is the name of the element that is in the 13th group, 2nd period?
Review Practice What is the name of the element that is in the 13th group, 2nd period? What is the name of the element that is in the 4B group, 7th period? Boron rutherfordium

19 What groups do we need to know?
-Halogen -Noble Gases -Alkali Metals -Alkaline (earth) metals

20 Research then create a whiteboard/poster paper with:
-Where to find it -Key characteristics -Elements we may know that are in this group -How to remember it

21 Alkali Metal

22 Alkaline Earth Metals

23 Halogen

24 Noble gases

25 Spectrum Analysis Glasses Questions Pencil Spot where you can see it

26 I can explain the key properties of a periodic table Which includes:
Review of Objectives: I can explain the key properties of a periodic table Which includes: -Period -Group -Nonmetal -Metal -Metalloid -Key groups

27 -Identify the alkali metal that is in the 4th row
Exit Slip: -Identify the alkali metal that is in the 4th row -Identify the element that is group 8A, row 6 -Potassium -Radon
