2
Vocabulary Motion Reference point International system of units (SI)
Distance Speed Average speed Instantaneous speed Velocity Acceleration Deceleration
3
What is Motion? Motion- an object is in motion if its position changes relative to another object Reference point- place or object used for comparison to determine if something is in motion **You may or may not be moving based on the reference point you choose Ex. your position compared to the sun
4
Measuring distance Distance- length of the path between 2 points
Measured in meters (m) International system of units(SI)- system of measurement
5
Speed Speed- the distance an object moves per unit of time
Type of rate Divide the distance the object travels by the amount of time it takes to travel that distance
6
Average speed Average speed- divide the total distance traveled by the total time Total distance km + 50km +12km = 65km Total time h + 3h + 1h = 5h Average speed km/ 5h= 13km/h
7
Instantaneous speed Instantaneous speed- speed at which an object is moving at a given instant in time *greater average speed wins the race
8
Velocity Velocity- speed in a given direction
Describes both speed and direction of an object Can involve change in speed, direction, or both
9
Acceleration Acceleration- the rate at which velocity changes
Refers to increasing speed, decreasing speed, or changing directions Whenever an object changes speed, the object accelerates Deceleration- slow down, negative acceleration
