1 Solving Inequalities Using Addition and Subtraction
Algebra 1: Section 3-2 Solving Inequalities Using Addition and Subtraction

2 Objectives: To use addition to solve inequalities
To use subtraction to solve inequalities

3 Equivalent Inequalities: inequalities with the same solutions.
Addition Property Subtraction Property For every real number a, b, & c, if a>b, then a+c>b+c Example: 3>1, so 3+2>1+2 …if a<b, then a+c<b+c Example: -5<4, so -5+2 <4+2 For every real number a, b, and c, if a>b, then a-c>b-c. Example: 3>-1, so 3-2 > -1-2 …if a<b, then a-c<b-c Example: -5<4, so -5-2 < 4-2

4 Using the Addition Property:
Solve x – 4 > 6 Solve y – 3 < 2

5 Using the Subtraction Property and Graph the solution:
Solve: m + 4 > 4 Solve: a + 5 < 10

6 Assignment: Pg. 142: multiples of 3 #3-69, 40, 41,75, 80, 84
