1 Matter & Energy In Ecosystems
Notes: Matter & Energy In Ecosystems

2 Our goal in this unit is to figure out how Matter + Energy are involved in organized systems that maintain Life!

3 (1) Matter & Cells Matter = Atoms Bonded Atoms = Molecules (Biomolecules) Organized Biomolecules = Organelles & Cells Cells = compartmentalized biomolecules

4 (2) Photosynthesis & Respiration
Sunlight + 6CO2 + 6H2O  C6H12O6 + 6O2 Respiration = C6H12O6 + 6O2  6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP CO2 , H2O , C6H12O6 , O2… C – O – H = atoms = matter

5 (3) Transfer & Conversion
Transfer: Movement from one location to another. Change of environment (Earth Location) Change in organism (cellular compartment) Conversion: Change in the form or type.

6 (4) Changes with Matter Transfer of Matter: Conversion of Matter:
Photosynthesis… Air & Soil  Organelles & Air Respiration… Organelles & Air  Other Cell Areas & Air Conversion of Matter: Break Bonds—Rearrange Atoms—Form New Bonds Change of State (Solid, Liquid, Gas)

7

8 (5) Changes with Energy Transfer of Energy: Conversion of Energy:
Photosynthesis… Sunlight  Bonds of Glucose Respiration… Bonds of Glucose  Phosphate Bonds of ATP Conversion of Energy: Light/Kinetic Energy  Chemical Potential Chemical Potential  Kinetic (Cell Processes)

9

10 (6) Thermodynamics The Laws: Energy cannot be created or destroyed.
If energy is not created or destroyed, it must be converted and transferred. Every time energy is converted  Some is “lost”.

11 How does this show the Laws of Thermodynamics?
