4
It’s essential to always know your lift.
for PowerPoint Never second-guess the performance of the equipment Be familiar with load and reach capacities Always inspect the equipment before and after each lift SAFETY TALKS! Never become complacent Just because you’ve done this a hundred times before © MMIV Bongarde Holdings Inc.
5
Lifts can be divided into three main components:
for PowerPoint Lifts can be divided into three main components: • The lifting device • The hitch SAFETY TALKS! • The load weight © MMIV Bongarde Holdings Inc.
6
A lifting device can be a crawler or truck crane, a pedestal-mounted crane or an overhead crane
for PowerPoint • When was it last inspected? • Has everything been checked for safety? SAFETY TALKS! • Has faulty equipment been removed from service? • Has the sling been checked for damage? • Have all repairs been made? © MMIV Bongarde Holdings Inc.
7
for PowerPoint Once you determine the total weight to be moved, the hitching method can be prepared. The weight of the load must be within the rated capacity of rigging equipment, including slings, hooks and shackles. SAFETY TALKS! © MMIV Bongarde Holdings Inc.
8
Make sure the sling is the type best suited to handle specific load
for PowerPoint It should have the proper attachments such as hooks or rings They should also be marked to identify the following: SAFETY TALKS! • The manufacturer • The maintenance date • The load rating © MMIV Bongarde Holdings Inc.
9
Always inspect the sling before each use
Run your hands along the fabric and feel for tears, holes, snags or frayed areas for PowerPoint Sharp edges may result in broken and/or worn stitches Most slings are made with a red warning string in the material SAFETY TALKS! This warning string will show through if the sling is heavily worn Defective slings must be removed from service immediately © MMIV Bongarde Holdings Inc.
10
Check everything before attempting a lift
for PowerPoint Put a light strain on the rigging and make sure the blocking, sling and all safety devices are in place Ensure the load is balanced and free of any restraints SAFETY TALKS! Make sure no one is standing near a suspended load or loads about to be lifted Everyone must be alert for possible snagging © MMIV Bongarde Holdings Inc.
11
Here are some other safety reminders:
• Do not place hands or fingers between the sling and load while the sling is being tightened for PowerPoint • Let the lifting device and rigging do the job; don’t use brute strength to prevent swinging or movement SAFETY TALKS! • Use a tagline or tether to control movement • Lift slowly with a steady application of power © MMIV Bongarde Holdings Inc.
