1 “We can, whenever we choose, successfully teach all children whose schooling is of interest to us. We already know more than we need to do that. Whether or not we do must finally depend on how we feel about the fact that we haven’t so far.” Ron Edmonds, 1982 Our kids do come tougher to teach, but that does not mean that they cannot be taught.

2 My story

3 Efficacy is the power to do ANYTHING you decide to do.
Method Mindset Teach data literacy and goal-setting to students. Deliver standards- and data-based instruction. Explicitly teach and reinforce a Growth Mindset to students.

4 Growth vs. Fixed Students with a Students with a
Fixed Mindset… Students with a Growth Mindset… think that their abilities are fixed. think that having difficulty at school means they must not be smart. give up relatively quickly and avoid challenges. do not think much about ability, they just like to learn. aren’t discouraged by failure and difficulty. demonstrate goal-directed persistence. …and they go to great and creative lengths to avoid them, because they have no other way to cope with F&D. Fixed mindsets are present in high functioning kids, too.

5 Growth vs. Fixed Teachers with a Teachers with a
Fixed Mindset Teachers with a Growth Mindset feel that they are being asked to do “the impossible.” think that some kids’ circumstances are so bad that they can’t be overcome. experience frustration and exhaustion (and sometimes burnout). do not believe in “impossible”. know that students can become proficient in spite of very difficult conditions. are energized and at peace with their work because they know they will find a way to reach their students.

6 Data and goal-setting Students learn to understand their own data and class data. Spring goals are set at Proficient or Advanced. Teachers strategically plant successes so students make the connection between their effort and their data. …proficient no matter where they are.

7 Standards/Data/Instruction
What does proficiency look like? DesCartes? CCSS? Where are my students now? What fills the gap between “here” and “there”?

8 Efficacy in your classroom?
