the reader to think or believe the same
things the author does or to encourage
them to do something
Ex; billboards

4. 3. Entertain - author wants to make
readers laugh, cry, feel suspense or
otherwise enjoy the writing
Ex; drama, fiction

5. 4. Explain - author gives directions, steps,
etc. on how something is done
Ex; instructional manual

6. Author's Viewpoint - the author's approval
or disapproval of a subject; their feeling
comes through in the tone of the words
used
Three types of tone;

7. 1. Positive tone - cheerful, happy, proud
2. Negative tone - sorrowful, angry, sarcastic
3. Neutral tone - doesn't show strong feelings one
way or another
