3. School Counselors
This power point will be posted on our school website this week. Contacting us by first is usually easiest due to limited phone access during the student school day. Parent appointments are encouraged.

4. Graduation Requirements
24 credits
2.0 GPA
4 English
4 Math (must include Alg 1, Geometry)
3 Science (must include Biology)
3 Social Studies (World History, US History, Govt, Economics)

Must pass FSA Reading (350+) or SAT/ACT
Must Pass Alg 1 EOC (399+) or PERT (97+) or SAT/PSAT/ACT
Must sit for Geometry, US History, and Biology EOCs (+ counts towards final grade)

5. Online Course Students must complete a full course online.
If it’s a two semester course, both semesters must be completed
If it’s a one semester course, one semester must be completed.
Students can do this with Pinellas Virtual or Florida Virtual. We recommend Pinellas Virtual.

6. Registration for next year
We will start the course registration process in February and continue through March.
Students are expected to speak to their current academic and academy elective teachers to help choose the best classes.
Math placement will be determined by EOC scores (math progression flowchart can be found on the ELHS website)
Course request sheets will be given to students in advance at a grade level assembly before finalizing their course options with the counselors.

7. ELHS Academies ENGINEERING BUSINESS
All ELHS students must pick 1 Academy to be a part of through 1 or more classes in their schedule.
Students may take classes in other academies than the chosen academy with the exception of engineering. Only engineering students may take engineering classes.

ADV. SCHOLAR COLLEGE SCHOLAR TECHNICAL/VOCATIONAL
Advanced Scholar is designed for students seeking admissions into an elite university
College Scholar is designed for students seeking admission into state colleges and/or community colleges
Technical/Vocational Scholar is designed for students seeking a technical/AS degree or a vocational/military path.

9. Diploma designations
Scholar: If a student passes all of the state EOCs, passes an AP/DE course, completes 2 years of a foreign language, earns a credit in Algebra 2, earns a credit in a math course higher than Algebra 2, earns a credit in chemistry/physics, and earns a credit in a science course equally rigorous to chemistry/physics. Merit: If a student earns a complete industry certification while in high school (i.e. Microsoft Bundle in Word, Power Point & Excel)

10. Acceleration Options
Students will now choose an accelerated option that will be or already is their goal to accomplish by the end of high school.
This is a district expectation to ensure our students are college and/or career ready. The accelerated options are 1 or more of the following:

PASS A CERTIFICATION TEST
PASS A DUAL ENROLL. COURSE

11. Quality point
Quality points are used to determine a student’s WEIGHTED GPA. Because honors, AP, and Dual Enrollment courses are more rigorous than regular classes, they are weighted heavier in regards to weighted GPA
Honors Courses - .5 weight
AP Courses – 1.0 weight
Example:
An A in a regular course = 4.0 weighted GPA
An A in an honors course = 4.5 weighted GPA
An A in an AP course/DE = 5.0 weighted GPA

15. PSAT Scores PSAT Scores have been released online
Handouts explaining how to log on and view their results as well as linking their College Board Account with Khan Academy has been presented to the students through English classes.
How your student performed on the PSAT is a good indicator as to how well they would do on the real SAT
Khan Academy offers free customized test preparation and practice for students to improve their scores

By viewing your student’s PSAT results on College Board, you will be able to see if your child is showing AP Potential

The purpose of this new program is to offer more dual enrollment/college level opportunities on our campus
Students will be asked to select this option on their course request sheets

24. PTC Dual Enrollment
Pinellas Technical College (Clearwater Campus) has a variety of different certification programs such as automotive, cosmetology, and cabinet making.
PTC Requirements are…..
Must be at least 16 years old
Must have a 2.0 GPA or higher
Must be off campus periods 1-3
Transportation can be provided for students that are enrolled with PTC.

25. Exam exemptions Attendance Requirement – no more than 4 days
(excused or unexcused in any one given class)
Grade Requirement – As and Bs
Exam Exemption form will be given to those students who qualify. Must be signed by an administrator and returned that same week in order to exempt.
If the student qualifies to do so, he/she can exempt up to 3 final exams (exceptions may occur with specific courses such as state EOC courses and/or if a student exempted the 1st semester of the same course).

26. College entrance exams SAT and act
We encourage college bound students to take one ACT & one SAT during the fall or spring of their junior year. Once the scores are received, it is recommended that the student retake whichever test he/she scored higher on at least one more time to see if scores can be increased. East Lake High School does offer all SATs and ACTs on campus. These take place on Saturdays at 8:00 a.m. ONLY Juniors will take one free SAT at ELHS during the school day in March. Florida colleges (and most others) will accept either the SAT or ACT.

AP Courses: “While most students think AP classes solely give you an early head start to college, they do much more than that. AP classes provide a learning environment that is unrivaled by honors and regular classes. The teachers and people you work with in AP classes benefit you in a way that goes beyond just learning the material of the class. AP classes are not for everyone, but the benefits that ensue from the hard work cannot be exaggerated.”

AP Capstone: “AP capstone has helped me learn how to effectively research topics of my choice and present them in an organized way. Throughout the year you only research a singular topic which is really refreshing because you can become an expert on one thing rather than learning a few facts about several different topics. Everyone in the class is intelligent in their own ways which facilitates very creative discussion.”

Band: “Band is an exhilarating and unique experience because music allows you to create something from nothing, and doing that with a group of people makes them your family – they will stick by you through anything and everything.” Chorus/Vocal Ensemble: “Music is everything I love. I started singing with the Chorus department here at ELHS, and the class helped me to develop my skills. I went through some drama with some of my friends during my junior year, and the singing and the atmosphere in the chorus room made all the drama go away. Chorus has helped me expand my passion for my music.”

AVID: “AVID is more than an elective, it’s a lifestyle, and it makes college dreams a reality. We learn things like how to succeed in college, how to prepare for tests like the PSAT and SAT/ACT, and we do college & career research. In addition, AVID is a community, and we are surrounded by the best.” Bio Medical Program: “The program has opened my eyes to the severity of some medical conditions and we have been able to go in to depth learning about the medical conditions and what solutions and treatments are available to those affected.”

Engineering:
“The engineering program has enabled me to develop my interests in building, making, and general engineering. The program aided me by coupling likeminded individuals who are just as passionate and interested in careers in engineering as I. Instead of going into college without a concentration in mind, I have been able to try out the different areas through the many course offerings -- design, manufacturing, aerospace, principles, and development.”

Business Academy: “I took Digital Information Technology as a freshman and learned a lot about the Microsoft programs.  I now understand a lot of computer terminology and how to navigate through the tools in these programs.  In 10th grade and now 11th grade, I have been taking Cyber Security.  I love this class because we get to do labs that are hands-on and really fun.  The labs consist of real cyber-attacks, but they don’t actually affect your computer.  They are like real life scenarios.”
