Warm Up 1. Draw a line that divides a right angle in half.
Session 2 Lesson 1 Warm Up 1. Draw a line that divides a right angle in half. 2. Draw three different squares with (3, 2) as one vertex. 3. Find the values of x and y if (3, –2) = (x + 1, y – 3) x = 2; y = 1

Warm Up 4. Write your name on the postic. Place the paper flat on your desk. Without lifting the paper, move the paper to make your name appear upside down. Describe what you did. Without lifting the paper, move the paper so your name appears closer to the edge of your desk. Describe what you did. Imagine holding the paper up to a mirror. Describe how your name appears in the mirror.

Objectives Identify reflections, rotations, and translations.
Session 2 Lesson 1 Objectives Identify reflections, rotations, and translations. Graph transformations in the coordinate plane.

Session 2 Lesson 1 The Alhambra, a 13th-century palace in Grenada, Spain, is famous for the geometric patterns that cover its walls and floors. To create a variety of designs, the builders based the patterns on several different transformations.

A transformation is a change in the position, size, or shape of a figure. The original figure is called the preimage. The resulting figure is called the image. A transformation maps the preimage to the image. Arrow notation () is used to describe a transformation, and primes (’) are used to label the image.

Session 2 Lesson 1

Session 2 Lesson 1 To find coordinates for the image of a figure in a translation, add a to the x-coordinates of the preimage and add b to the y-coordinates of the preimage. Translations can also be described by a rule such as (x, y)  (x + a, y + b).

Session 2 Lesson 1 A dilation enlarges or reduces all dimensions proportionally. A dilation with a scale factor greater than 1 is an enlargement, or expansion. A dilation with a scale factor greater than 0 but less than 1 is a reduction, or contraction.
