1 Cells

2 Thursday 2 May What makes an organism?
SLO: Give the names and positions of major plant and human organs. Some working on CSI catch-ups Group activity – draw in named human organs on large paper. Compare body outlines to plastic torso. Use this and p. 4, ES7 to discuss location and names of organs. What makes an organism? Looking at the connection between cells, tissues, organs, organism – notes. Homework – learn organs keywords

3 Friday 3 May Major plant and human organs
SLO: Describe what the major plant and human organs do. Paste in SLO’s and keywords Looking at models of monocot stem and leaf cross-sections. Looking at where the specialised tissues are and what they do. Reading p. 6, ES7 as a class and discussing organ shape and function for humans. Reading p. 5, ES7 and comparing diagram with some examples of weeds pulled up from a garden. Complete Qs 1 and 2, p. 6, ES7. Draw plant diagram in books and label main organs, briefly describing functions of each (re-cap biological drawings). Compare animal and plant organs – how are they the same and how are they different? Draw a Venn diagram. Homework: Learning Organs keywords + 7Aa/5 – Where the organs are.

4 Thursday 9 May An introduction to the microscope
SLO: Set up a microscope and use it to observe cells. Quick quiz on organs keywords Amazing images through the eyes of the electron microscope - ppt Instruction on how a microscope needs to be set up Set up a microscope and investigate how the letter “e” appears when viewed. Then, see how many millimetres across the circle is for magnification 10x4 (40) and 10x10 (100) – record in table. Do the “Microscopes” worksheet. EXT: Complete 7Ab/6 – Slides and microscopes crossword. Homework: Learning Organs keywords + 7Ab/5 – Slide making.

5 Friday 10 May Observing plant and animal cells
SLO: Set up a microscope and use it to observe cells. Instruction on how to prepare, stain and draw human cheek cells and onion cells. Set up slides and complete biological drawings using checklist. Fill in Cell Types worksheet Homework: Learning Organs keywords + 7Ab/7 – Plant and animal cells.

6 Thursday 16 May and Friday 17 May Plant and animal cells and their parts
Working through textbook activities, diagrams of plant and animal cells and descriptions of the different parts.

7 Thursday 23 May Parts of the cell
Cell booklet task L5 Cells ppt – overview of cell types Follow the instructions on the next slide, and using your worksheets, to complete parts of the cell task

8 Complete the following tasks:
Cut the coloured animal and plant cells out and paste them into your book. You will use these for reference. Paste the parts/picture information squares onto card. Cut out and make an envelope to hold them. Make the flip book with parts of the cell. Follow the directions on the sheet. Use the word bank to fill in the blanks – paste sheet into your book. Using the information from the previous activities, learn the names of the different organelles, and then label the plant and animal diagrams. Paste into your book. Complete the VENN diagram. Paste in. Complete the word search. Paste in. Use a colour key for the different organelles and colour in the plant and animal cell. Use a piece of cardboard. Cut out the organelles, arrange onto the board, draw a plant cell and then glue in your organelles and label. `

9 Friday 24 May Types of cells
Cell booklet task L5 Cells ppt – overview of cell types Follow the instructions on the next slide, and using your worksheets, to complete parts of the cell task

10 Thursday 30 May Research: Human Cell Types
Complete cell booklet task Use devices to find out and do the following: • Draw a labelled picture of your cell (use pencil, not too small) • Where is your cell found • What does your cell do in the body (what is its main job) • Why does your cell look the way it does (think about how it is different from a general animal cell – the diagrams we have been doing).

12 Friday 31 May Cell Reproduction
SLO: Describe how cells divide. • Recognise that both cells need a copy of the (genetic) information in the nucleus Re-cap on yesterday’s lesson – types of cells How do cells reproduce? Looking at Mitosis – what is it, what is it’s purpose, briefly how it works (notes) Read p. 13, ES7 and summarise key ideas. Do questions 1-4 Making cells assignment: going over instructions and exemplars Paste assignment into your book and the due date Begin planning your assignment Due date: Thursday 13 June
