My revision tips Re-read the opening stage directions and have a sticky note for each stage direction in your room. Mr Birling in opening stage direction is “heavy looking portentous man” (portentous = significant and it shows how he thinks he has power and as factory owner he abuses that power) Read the whole play in ONE sitting with a highlighter in one hand! Read over the inspector’s final speech and all the persuasive techniques he uses. Have at least 3 key facts about 1912 lodged into your head!

WHICH OF THESE AO3 (CONTEXT) FACTS ARE TRUE AND WHICH ARE FALSE?
Discuss with your partner. Do not write anything down until told! J.B Priestley was a socialist, that means he believed in all of society particularly the lower classes in being treated fairly. He formed socialist groups as well. In 1912, women were subservient to men and the best they could do was marry and they couldn’t vote. The average working week in 1912 was around 34 hours. The difference between the classes wasn’t that big in 1912. Labour won by a landslide victory in 1945 after WW2.

INSPECTOR CALLS ESSAY
10
HOW TO WRITE THE ESSAY? Have an introduction where you give a bit of context, mention Priestley’s message to try and change attitudes and teach his audience about learning from past mistakes and state a link to the question. If it’s a character question I would have a sentence like: Priestley uses Mr Birling as an exaggerative reflection on upper class men who ignore their social responsibilities so that it teaches both a 1945 and modern day audience to avoid being like Mr Birling. 2. The essay is then you doing a quotation per paragraph covering the whole play. Analyse quotations in detail! 3. Finish with a conclusion where you state what Priestley was trying to achieve and you GO BACK TO THE QUESTION!
