What is a project? Definition
A Project is a discrete piece of work that has a clear objective, a finite duration and the involvement of more than one person Examples Building a new house Introducing a new system Launching a new product Before a project can be kicked off there are a number of questions to be answered – these are captured in your project charter
2
We Use Charters to Avoid?
Lack of focus and direction. Disagreements about the purpose and scope of the team’s work from both inside and outside the team. Inadequate or poor support and resources to accomplish the task. Misunderstandings about the budget and resources allocated. Less than optimum selection of team members. Increased likelihood that the team’s work will conflict with or duplicate another team’s efforts.

What Makes a Good Lean Six Sigma Project?
There is no known solution The root cause is not known The problem is complex and needs statistical analysis The problem is part of a process The process is repeatable A defect can be defined Project will take 6-9 months There are data available There is a team to complete it

1. PROJECT TITLE: ASSESS AND REASSESS ( reducing AVLOS in the AMSSU) 5. CHAMPION / SPONSOR: Dr Michael Flately 2. PROBLEM STATEMENT: The (insert name) hospital currently has an Average Length of Stay (AVLOS) in its Acute Medical Short Stay Unit (AMSSU) of 72 hours ( , 2016 to date). The National Acute Medicine Programme KPI is 48 hrs. Two other Tertiary referral centres within the group with the same bed availability and similar catchment area demographics are achieving the KPI (36 and 44 hours respectively). The 72 hour AVLOS means that the AMSSU is not functioning as intended and not meeting the needs of the (insert name) hospital in caring for patients on the Acute Medicine Pathway in an efficient and timely manner. 6.
