WARM UP – February 11th BE PREPARED TO ANSWER THE FOLLOWING REVIEW QUESTIONS: What were the causes of the French and Indian War (what did each side want)? What advantages helped the British win the war? What did the British do that would start making the colonies resent them?

CREATE A MOVIE POSTER Your assignment is to make a movie poster for a movie you are directing about the French and Indian War Graded on: Title (25 pts), the slogan for the movie (25 pts), Starring actors (25 pts), colorful images (25 pts) Your poster needs to be historically accurate – title, slogan, picture should all be related to something that really occurred during the French and Indian War

LASTING EFFECTS OF THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR
1. Colonists see how the British mistreat the French (take away their rights) (Think about it-If they did it to the French, could it happen to the colonist?) 2. British raise colonial taxes to pay off the war 3. British are cruel to the Natives (give them smallpox-on purpose) 4. Proclamation of 1763-told colonists they couldn’t settle west of the Appalachian Mountains (they thought it was too expensive to protect and wanted to contain the colonists)

THE SUGAR ACT Sugar Act - raised the tax rates on imports of raw sugar and molasses New taxes were placed on silk, wine, coffee, pimento and indigo

SUGAR ACT James Otis, a colonist argues:
Parliament (government assembly in Britain) could impose taxes to regulate trade, taxing Americans to pay for British programs was different the colonies had no representation in Parliament

Issue the Declaration of Rights and Grievances: Only the colonists political representation had the right to tax the colonists Boycotted all British goods Resulted in many British losing their jobs Act repealed in 1766

TOWNSHEND ACTS Townshend Acts 1767 – Taxes on imports and exports
Imports: Glass, lead, paper, paint, and tea Allowed British to search any colonist and seize any goods that they thought were smuggled

TOWNSHEND ACTS Colonist reaction – boycott goods and turn to violence against custom officers imposing the acts 1768 – violence against custom officers increases in Boston RESULT: THE BOSTON MASSACRE

EXIT REVIEW: Using the same sheet that you used to answer the questions for the primary sources, answer these questions: 1. What was the purpose of the British passing the Sugar Act? The Stamp Act? The Townshend Acts? 2. What was the colonist reaction to these acts? 3. What was the Boston Massacre?
