Luke 24:13-35 And behold, two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem.

Luke 24:13-35 And they were conversing with each other about all these things which had taken place.

Luke 24:13-35 And it came about that while they were conversing and discussing, Jesus Himself approached, and began traveling with them.

Luke 24:13-35 But their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him.

Luke 24:13-35 And He said to them, “What are these words you are exchanging with one another as you are walking?” And they stood still, looking sad.

Luke 24:13-35 And one of them, named Cleopas, answered and said to Him, “Are You the only one visiting Jerusalem and unaware of the things which have happened here

Luke 24:13-35 in these days?”

Luke 24:13-35 And He said to them, “What things?” And they said to Him, “The things about Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word in the sight

Luke 24:13-35 of God and all the people, and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him up to the sentence of death and crucified Him.

Luke 24:13-35 But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, it is the third day since these things happened.

Luke 24:13-35 But also some women among us amazed us. When they were at the tomb early in the morning, and did not find His body, they came saying that they

Luke 24:13-35 had also seen a vision of angels, who said that He was alive.

Luke 24:13-35 And some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just exactly as the women also had said; but Him they did not see.”

Luke 24:13-35 And He said to them, “O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these

Luke 24:13-35 things and to enter into His glory?” And beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.

Luke 24:13-35 And they approached the village where they were going, and He acted as though He would go farther.

Luke 24:13-35 And they urged Him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is getting toward evening, and the day is now nearly over.” And He went in to stay with them.

Luke 24:13-35 And it came about that when He had reclined at the table with them, He took the bread and blessed it, and breaking it, He began giving it to them.

Luke 24:13-35 And their eyes were open, and they recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight.

Luke 24:13-35 And they said to one another, “Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He was explaining the

Luke 24:13-35 Scriptures to us?” And they arose that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found gathered together the eleven and those who were with them, saying,

Luke 24:13-35 “The Lord has really risen, and has appeared to Simon.”

Luke 24:13-35 And they began to relate their experiences on the road and how He was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread.

Can you imagine what it must have been like?

You just invested over a year of your life thinking the Messiah had come and the Romans would finally be dealt with…

Only to have everything change in an instant as Jesus was crucified.

All the hopes and dreams you had for the next several years seem to be completely destroyed.

All your immediate plans are gone!

Now somebody is claiming that He’s alive from the dead!

You’re thinking it’s all over.

It’s time to figure out what you’re going to do next.

It’s time to go!

Does anybody know what Cleopas means?

To tell of the Glory of the Father!

Oh to tell of His Glory!

Is Cleopas running from his destiny?

Before it’s all over, will he get the chance to declare?

Does anybody know what the word Emmaus means?

If you think of it as a noun, it means a Hot Spring.

It you think of it as descriptive, it means to be Hot!

Oh to be set on fire for God!

Oh that our relationship with Him is like the joy of a Hot Spring!

Has the fire gone out for Cleopas and his friend?

Are they now destined to be cold?

Isn’t it interesting that Jesus encouraged them to know, believe and live by the Words of Scripture.

He encouraged them not to be cold, but confidently burn!

He definitely wants us to do the same.

Then He shared undoubtedly the greatest Bible lesson of all time.

I wish I could have been there to hear Him share the rich truth of His own story.

There’s definitely a difference between knowing God and simply knowing about Him.

Luke only gives us a few clues.

We see words like Moses and the Prophets;

And a statement that He explained and/or identified Himself throughout the Old Testament Scripture.

Wow!

Theologians describe these stories with three specific words: Theophany, Christophany and Prophecy.

The greatest Theophany of God is Jesus Christ Himself.

John 1:1-2 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.

John 1:14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Here are some other Theophanies in Scripture.

Imagine if Jesus said, “I was there
Imagine if Jesus said, “I was there.”; after each of the following statements.

Theophany Genesis 2 – God walked and talked with Adam in the garden.
Genesis 12 – God appeared to Abram and promised land.

Theophany Exodus 3 – The Angel of the Lord speaks from the burning bush. Deuteronomy 31 – The Lord appeared in a pillar of cloud to Moses.

Theophany Job 38 – God answers Job out of a tempest or whirlwind.
Genesis 1 – In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Anthropomorphic language!

Anytime we try to give God human characteristics in order to understand Him better.

Anthropomorphic

A visible manifestation of Jesus Christ in the Old Testament!

Here are some Christophanies in Scripture.

Imagine if Jesus said,“That was Me
Imagine if Jesus said,“That was Me.”; after each of the following statements.

Christophany Genesis 18 – The Lord appeared and promised the birth of Isaac. Genesis 32 – Jacob wrestles with God who appeared as a man.

Christophany Genesis 15 – The Lord appears to Abram and walks through the blood as a smoking oven and a flaming torch.

Christophany Daniel 3 – The Lord appears as the fourth man in the fire. Acts 9 – The Lord appeared to Saul at his conversion.

Here are just some of the prophecies Jesus fulfilled by His coming.

Imagine if Jesus said, “It’s fulfilled
Imagine if Jesus said, “It’s fulfilled.”; after each of the following statements.

Prophecy Genesis 3 – Seed of a Woman.
Isaiah 7 – He will be born of a virgin. Micah 5 – Born in Bethlehem.

Prophecy Isaiah 35 – Perform signs of healing.
Isaiah 42 – A light to the nations. Numbers 21 – Lifted up!

Prophecy Zechariah 9 – Riding on a donkey’s colt.
Psalm 2 – Called the Son of God. Daniel 7 – Called the Son of Man.

Prophecy Isaiah 53 – He will suffer, be despised and rejected.
Psalm 16 – His body will not see decay. Jeremiah 31 – He will bring a New Covenant.

There’s even more fulfillment to come!

What road are you on?

Are you walking with Jesus?

Are you even looking for Jesus?

Are you pursuing your plans or His?

Will you do what He wants or what you want?

Luke said they recognized Him after He blessed the bread, broke it and gave it to them.

When will our eyes be fully opened?

What will it take?

Will we remember His body broken for us?

Will we remember His blood poured out for us?

Will we be set on fire for Him?

Will we declare the Glory of the Father?

What will it take?

Luke 24:32 And they said to one another, “Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He was explaining the

Luke 24:32-33 Scriptures to us?” And they arose that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found gathered together the eleven and those who were with them, saying,

Luke 24:34 “The Lord has really risen, and has appeared to Simon.”

Luke 24:35 And they began to relate their experiences on the road and how He was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread.

Is your heart constantly set a blaze by the Word of God?

What will it take?

Will you testify of the things you have experienced with Him on the road?

What will it take?
