Senior Project Problem: Students continually asked for and spent time seeking our basic information to get through the senior project process Actions: Summer of 2016 developed a comprehensive guide for our students Worked with Librarians, Career Services, Business Faculty to collect and review resources Guide Includes: SP Expectations Project Management Resources Research & Data Collection Methods Career Development Writing, Presenting & APA Guide Project Examples, Photos and more Lessons Learned: Provides “RAILS” regarding expectations Allows students to spend more time on project goals & outcomes Minimizes Instructor time explaining resource questions Provides for more in-depth discussion to elevate projects

Business Law Problem: Covering only 1/3 of content of a text purchased by students Actions: Summer of 2017 moved to an open source (OER) Text Found content to be similar, covering the topics covered Created new exam banks Also developed updated study guides/glossaries Supplemented OER - pod casts, mock trials, my actual (redacted) cases Lessons Learned: Business Law- Basically all the same content Active learning & mini project approach rather than lecture More engagement

Excel Problem: Using $150 book plus $70 lab for a 1 credit class – mostly a tutorial approach Actions: Fall of 2016 developed BB class with OER Used resources from the OER: Spreadsheets Videos Images Created labs from the OER content Lessons Learned: Take copy of OER version Shared this BB class with others teaching class- now is a standard for this class.

Human Resources I Problem:
Add Computer simulation without adding more cost for students Align online and campus classes Actions: Summer of 2018 moved to OER Textbook Added Computer Simulation Students manage HR Department and compete against each other Developed exams, study guides, updated content Lessons Learned: Combine textbook, simulation and other materials for cohesive experience Students engagement increased application of content

Human Resources II Problem: How to teach collective bargaining in an authentic way Actions: Incorporated in-depth union negotiation exercise Learned about this at a Business Simulation conference Created a three week in-depth simulated exercise where students negotiated a union contract Link: Lessons Learned: Simulations do not need to be computerized Second class – students spent the whole class applying knowledge from the prior content My future OER project!
