Can Pharmacogenomics Prevent Disability due to Mental Illness?
Mark Faiz P.Eng. CEO May 29th ,2019
2
*Mental Health Roundtable Report: 2012, Statistics Canada, CAMH
Mental Illness *15% of working Canadians are suffering from mental illness. The cost of mental illness is approximately *$70 billion in Canada. Disability due to mental illness accounts for *30% of prevalence but *70% of the total cost of disability in Canada Loss of productivity, absenteeism and disability. *Mental Health Roundtable Report: 2012, Statistics Canada, CAMH
3
Mental Health Disability Claims are a Big Issue
Sun Life Financial Group Benefits Long Term Disability approvals by diagnosis (July June 2013)
4
Diabetes *7.3% of working Canadians are suffering from diabetes.
Hardly any Canadians claim disability due to diabetes. Canadians with diabetes respond readily to medication. *Statistics Canada
5
What Makes Mental Illness Different?
Diabetes Drug action not measurable Directly measurable Activated and cleared mainly through the liver (proper enzyme function required) Cleared mainly by the Kidneys Attaches to brain receptor (must have right receptor function) Acts directly on receptors in the pancreas. Associated with more side effects pertaining to the brain (i.e.. Mental fog, sedation, insomnia etc.) Sometimes associated with gastrointestinal effects
6
The Challenge: Trial and Error Treatment for Patients with Mental Illness
*50% of psychiatric medications fail the first time. Adverse reactions can be so severe, they become worse than the illness. *Why don’t antidepressants work in some patients? European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP)
7
Differential Drug Response
Patient Group Drug NOT toxic but beneficial Drug toxic and NOT beneficial Same diagnosis, same prescription Drug NOT toxic but NOT beneficial Drug toxic but beneficial
8
Phases of Drug Actions Drug Administration- dose Absorption
Distribution Metabolism Elimination Clearance Drug + Receptor Interaction Metabolism, Elimination Effect (Stimulation or Inhibition)
9
Testing employees on disability in 2018
We tested 67 employees on disability due to mental disorders in 2018. We noticed that 100% had genetic mutations that would complicate mental illness medication for them.
10
The 1000 Genome Project An analysis of the ongoing 1000 Genome Project statistics for the genes that impact mental illness medications resulted in the following: *40% of the population possess genetic mutations such that if they develop mental illness and need medication, they would face complexities *1000 Genome Project
11
Genetic Mutation Scores & Morbidity of Employees with Disability
Higher Morbidity & Genetic Mutation Score Genetic mutation score: number of mutated genes Baseline Morbidity score: side-effects and baseline function at home and at work based on pre-test questionnaire
12
Change in Morbidity of Employees with Disability after P3 Test
Lower Morbidity after P3 Service

Mental Illness related Disability in the Workforce
Out of 100% of the Canadian workforce, 40% have high genetic mutations (1) 15% suffer from mental illness(3) and many resort to medications 7.5% have NO medication problems 7.5% suffer from medication issues (4) These most likely have high mutation scores 2-3% go on DISABILITY (5, 6)** Genome Project & Personalized Prescription Inc. A Real- Life Testimonial
"I cannot say enough, it changed my life. I am so thankful for the opportunity and for what it has done for my life in a short period."- Brian Berry Brian Berry was experiencing persistent daytime sleepiness, anxiety, and depression. His inability to function at home had cost him his marriage. His business was also affected as he was not able to keep up with his workload. He was taking multiple medications, and nothing seemed to work. At one point, he thought something more serious was going on with his health and he needed to do something about it. He spoke to Personalized Prescribing Inc. on how his life changed after the P3- Pharmacogenomic Test.
