Radioactive decay results in the emission of either: an alpha particle (a), 42He nucleus + energy a beta particle (b), 0-1 e (electron) + energy or a gamma ray(g), no particle, just energy

Extend/Evaluation PART 1: Students develop their own visual model of each type of radioactive decay (alpha, beta, gamma), focusing on the particles involved and the penetration ability for each. PART 2: Students will read about diagnostic applications of nuclear medicine or about therapeutic applications of nuclear medicine from the Radioisotopes Brochure from the NRC. Students should record what they believe are three key points or facts from their assigned section. Students then form groups of 4 containing 2 students who read about therapeutic applications and 2 students who read about diagnostic applications. In their groups, students share what they have learned in order to compose a group public service announcement (PSA) brochure about the benefits of nuclear chemistry in medicine.
