Midterm Exam Review Who Am I?
A.P. Psychology
2
Who Am I? 1. I discovered that people with an injury to a certain part of the brain may not have the ability to comprehend speech, they can mumble all kinds of sounds, maybe even words, but what they are saying often has no meaning.
3
Who Am I? 2. A leader of Behaviorism, he conditioned fear into a 9 month old, by pairing loud sounds with the presentation of the rat. Poor little Albert.
4
Who Am I? 3. We discovered that when we deprive a subject of visual stimulation early in life, that they will not be able to perceive it later in life. We did our study on cats.
5
Who Am I? 4. 1st Woman President of the American Psychological Association. Set up the first women’s Psychology lab.
6
Who Am I? 5. I wrote the “Origin of Species” and believe that people adapt their behaviors over time in order to survive.
7
Who Am I? 6. I study the ability of eye witnesses to accurately retell their experiences. Turns out, they are rather terrible at it.
8
Who Am I? 7. I said that in our working memory we have the ability to remember about 7 items (plus or minus 2).
9
Who Am I? 8. I discovered that when I cut the corpus callosum of cats that memories are stored in only half of our brains. Thus when the cats were trained on a task with one eye covered, when the eye patch was removed the cat was unable to remember what to do in the task.
10
Who Am I? 9. I develop a curve to demonstrate that with the passage of time, we forget items stored into our memories. Right away, we forget large numbers of things, then as time goes on, the loss slows down. I use myself as a test subject and would recite up to 15,000 items, to conduct my research.
11
Who Am I? 10. I said that people can be trained to act in certain ways, but reinforcement is the key. I thought I could train anyone or anything through reinforcement.
12
Who Am I? 11. I set children in a room with toys, then watched them play. Next I had an adult come in and act aggressively with the toys. I wanted to see if the children would copy the activity or not.
13
Who Am I? 12. I used dogs to point out that animals respond automatically to a stimuli, but that they can be trained to respond to stimuli that was previously neutral by pairing it with an unconditioned stimulus.
14
Who Am I? 13. I conduct studies on the subject of taste aversion. For instance, once you get food poisoning from eating at Macho Taco’s, you probably won’t eat there again. Just like the sheep and the coyotes in England.
15
Who Am I? 14. I discovered that people who have a certain area of the brain damaged are no longer able to speak. They understand language, they just can not produce it.
16
Who Am I? 15. I think that you have thoughts that are hidden, sometimes exposed in dreams, and sometimes exposed in the words you say when you don’t mean to say them.
17
Who Am I? 16. I create the first Psychology lab, I develop the field of Structuralism, and I form the idea of Introspection, the idea that we can study the our own thoughts.
18
Who Am I? 17. I am the pioneer of right brain vs left brain research. I discover that your left brain is good at solving puzzles, and singing words in a song, while the right side of the brain is involved in processing conversation and spatial and visual perception.
19
Who Am I? 18. I study apes. I give them puzzles to figure out. Through insight learning the solution to the problem, suddenly develops and they solve the problem and get the food.
20
Who Am I? 19. I discover that activities of the mind can be measured quantitatively and thus psychology can be more than a philosophy, it can be SCIENCE!
21
Who Am I? 20. I am the father of functionalism. I study why human thought is adaptive, how it is flexible and fluid. I am the first in the U.S. to offer a Psychology class and am often called the father of Psychology in the U.S.
22
Who Am I? 21. I am the father of the Humanistic Approach. I believe that people have an ability to have positive growth, and the freedom to choose their own destiny. We have the ability to choose our own lives and destiny. I also believe that people can be driven by altruism and free will.
23
Who Am I? 22. I came up with the law of effect. The idea that behaviors followed by pleasant outcomes will be strengthened, while behaviors followed by negative outcomes will be weakened.
24
Who Am I? 23. I advocate for better treatment for the mentally ill. I develop the first mental institution.
25
Who Am I? 24. I demonstrate that we are always learning, even when it is not an intention to do so. I use mice and a maze to show that latent learning can effectively teach as well as the rats that were reinforced to learn the maze quickly.
26
Who Am I? 25. I am the first woman to earn a PhD in Psychology, I experimented with animal behavior and motor development.
27
Who Am I? 26. I am one of the first to conduct psychological experiments. My research enables for more accurate testing and intense research. I discover the just noticeable difference theory.
28
Who Am I? 27. I discover that the more surprising the unconditional stimulus is, the larger the effect it will have on learning.
